NVIDIAs run CPU core full bore, whereas ATI does not. Personally, this is why I'm buying and ATI for a rig. And yes, a little upset about 680's performace, but oh well, at least I get to see those used at GPUgrid, and have more hardware to purchase for here.
Now I don't have to choose!!!! |

j.post asked about the HD7450 and HD7570 but I don't see them listed on knreed's GPU breakdown
---------------------------------------- I wonder why ??? Did anyone run these cards and did they do well ? http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,32990_offset,40 P.S. nanoprobe, I wasn't trying to be snide or smart a$$ when I asked "How about your's ?" I genuinely wanted to know because I think knreed's averages may or may not be entirely accurate. There are so many variables and a lot of funky set-ups and totally inexperienced GPU crunchers. I guess for most people it will be "run what you brung" and learn as we go. ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Apr 22, 2012 10:19:49 PM] |

@nanoprobe Mine ran the Beta's in 3 minutes... That's plenty fast enough. How about your's ? 180-195 seconds.

There's also the fact that these aren't "batched up" meaning currently these betas are only one HCC WU per beta WU. I would explect them, at project launch or in future betas, to have multiple WUs in each beta. Or MAYBE even offer the ability to run multiples on one GPU such as Einsteins app.
Curious to see if this effects runtime against GPU brands. Again, I must say that I am expecting ATI to pull out ahead. As skgiven has noted though, multiple mid-range cards should be able to get more done, further since NVIDIA locks up one core/thread per GPU for OpenCl, I would PERSONALLY expect those with HT rigs would benefit more from ATI, since they would be able to have more free cores/threads available for other tasks, while NVIDIA will not. |

Or MAYBE even offer the ability to run multiples on one GPU such as Einsteins app. You could accomplish that with an app_info file but since my GPUs were running @ 95% on this project I wouldn't go there. If yours were running at a lower percentage then that might be an option.

With projects moving toward GPU crunching, or the numerous other GPU crunching projects, it's almost cost effective to buy a cheap quad core processor but a good motherboard that can run 3 or 4 GPU's. My xeons where pricey. Seeing the cost of the newer ones, I won't be shelling out any more for xeons. Just have to find a GPU that doesn't guzzle the electricity so bad.

Sounds to me like the AMD gridComputing solution!... Just have to find a GPU that doesn't guzzle the electricity so bad. The AMD HD7770 might just fit the bill:"Now the 7770 board consumes roughly 80 Watts when gaming. In idle, roughly 10 Watts, and when your monitor shuts down it will throttle down even further towards 3 Watts. That's impressive stuff." -- guru3d.com "AMD isn’t hitting particularly amazing price points, it’s not doing anything amazing for performance, but it is doing everything that the previous generation of cards from both companies could do at significantly lower power. As a result, efficiency improves and you get a lot more performance per watt consumed." -- tomshardware.com ; |

Unlike the 7770, the 7750 is a single-slot card and doesn't require a second power supply, so I can swap it in to replace my Nvidia GT 430. A number of reviews call the 7750 the fastest graphics card at under 75 watts. It is a double-precision card, and of course is OpenCL capable. It is definitely a low-end card, but I am looking forward to seeing what it can do. I'll report back when I get it up and running. ![]() |

Unless I'm reading it wrong. From my research, only the 7900 series is double precision, which is what I want. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
