This was covered in great depth many years ago at UD - (whose program you are using) and the point is IBM, or UD is not a charity and those are the ones who you are donating to! So you cannot claim you are donating to a charity. ![]() Scribe, thanks.. you have reference links? Scribe.. the below isn't intended for you... it's for the knot-heads at IBM & UD..... JUST WHY ISN'T THIS DISCLOSED BEFORE WE USE THIS PGM???????? ![]() |

Participating in a "good cause" should be incentive enough. After all it's not a republican endeavor ![]() For the individual, this is true. However, there are thousands of desktop systems used in major corporations. They are all behind firewalls and cannot access WCD without authorization. They are an enormous resource that will go untapped because these corporations need to see that there is something in it for them. |

Note that the World Community Grid IS ..repeat.. IS a non-profit organization specifically limited to non-profit humanitarian projects. It is funded by IBM for PR purposes / charitable purposes (take your pick). It has been set up this way so that you CAN donate to it as a charitable cause without the problems involved in donating to UD or IBM. Nonetheless, I would prefer the hassle of documenting a home office for the IRS than the headache of deducting several cents of electricity. That is just my opinion, of course.

...and Grid.org was set up in exactly the same way, well before IBM did it, and you STILL cannot clain the tax on it. We went through this at Grid many years ago, with tax lawyers, there is NO way!

Thanks for correcting me. I was underestimating the efficiency of the IRS acting as a goalkeeper to block deductions.

It seems to me that the issue at hand is not the monetary value of our donated CPU work but our proprietary rights concerning the information that is a direct result of the collective, privately held resources of the citizenry. We don't expect to make any profit; we just want to safeguard the notion of "public" reasearch. We also don't want businesses throwing around terms like "non-profit" just for the PR value. This is misleading and illegal.
----------------------------------------If the current tax structure of WCG is unaccomodating, perhaps someone could design a peer-to-peer platform/organization that truly is non-profit. It could provide a platform where businesses and research institutions reach the people through it in order to safeguard the people's rights. In this manner donations could be recorded and accorded whatever (nominal) value they might represent, information could be maintained in a public forum, and new forms of patents, public patents might issued whereby educational and non-profit organizations have free access and non-paticpatory businesses could pay a licensing fee. It could really revolutionize and re-energize public research. And this is a perfect community of people to get the ball rolling. We could develop a Technological Bill of Rights in regards to grid computing. If the people demand it, they usually get it. And look, WCG needs help. As it stands I am reluctant to recommend this program to friends due to lack of support and moderators. More control needs to be given to the users. More information and an honest attempt to address questions about the proprietary nature of information produced on our computers need to be put forth in good faith. And lastly, if everyone who wrote a request or question in this forum e-mailed it to staff, I think more moderators would be forthcoming. If they have more e-mail than they can handle, it will become a neccesity. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Nov 30, 2004 1:18:50 AM] |
