My Settings Got a Mind of their Own Tonight! Head Scratching Now
I've been running pretty regularly with the same preference settings running 4 WUs at a time my quad-core HP dv7 laptop. Only time I change preferences is generally for either WUs I'm crunching (and I've been set the same why on SN2S and some Clean Energy 2 WUs for several weeks now). Only other perference I change from time to time is the one impacting workload buffer. I was running for a few hours tonight and after 2 hours or so started getting high CPU warnings on my laptop. Discovered that 8 WUs all of the sudden were working at same time. So I suspended all but 4 for awhile to bring down CPU busy. After awhile I was close to one finishing up so I tired to open my workload buffer to 1 day and resume some WUs. All of the sudden I got a flood of WUs - about 16 new WUs in one shot. Scratching my head now wondering why my settings seem to be wanting to run so much stuff and now getting a big backlog to crunch through. Once I can figure out how to turn things back to reasonable levels and have them work, I should be Ok - might take a couple days to work off the backlog I have but otherwise not the end of the world. I'm copying my message log in case anyone with keen eyes see something amise or some setting that got goofy. I know that at some point the messages were indicating that the number of CPUs went from 4 to 8 - but looking at my device seetings I have them still at max of 4 and max cpu at 50% so again headscratching on this one.....

You said the number of cpus went from 4 to 8. That's not the case, actually. You see it says 8, but that's when it's doing the benchmarking, it sees 8, but it's using only 4.

As for your cpu %, I wonder if you're misinterpreting the wording: suspend work if non-BOINC CPU load exceeds 25 %. That means that if you're doing something other than BOINC that is taking more than 25% of the cpu, it will suspend BOINC crunching til that % gets back below 25% again.

As for preferences, whenever you see it say: "Reading preferences override file", that means you changed some setting(s) in your BOINC manager itself, thus it created an override file that it will then use instead of the project defaults that are normally used from here on the WCG site.

First, go to the WCG site here, and select the MY GRID > DEVICE MANAGER > DEFAULT on the right side (I say this because I don't know if you use separate settings for home, work, etc), and then enter the settings you wish to use, and click SAVE.

THEN go to your BOINC Manager and select TOOLS > COMPUTING PREFERENCES and click CLEAR, then click OK.

THEN staying in BOINC MANAGER, go to your PROJECTS tab, and click UPDATE. This will force a communication with the server to re-download your new settings you just entered on the WCG site here.

Doing the clear on the preferences and updating worked. Looks like my laptop is back to running 4 WUs at a time. Now I've just got maybe 4-5 days of SN2S backlogged WUs to crunch to get things completely back to normal :-)

Now from what I've seen in these forums, the preferences appears to be the place to set an additional work buffer to stage some extra work. Any way to do that without getting into the interesting situation I happen to see last night where I've got WUs running all over the place?

Click on: My Grid->Device Manager->Device Profiles->Default

Then hit the Custom Profile Radio button.

This will open up the profile for changes.

Don't forget to press Save (or Cancel) at the bottom.
