Since about a week ago I noticed I wasn't getting CEP2 tasks anymore but I thought there might be a problem with the project or maybe the priority was lowered. That was until I actually took a look at the log, just to see this abomination:
----------------------------------------4/6/2012 11:27:42 PM | World Community Grid | Message from server: The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2 requires 63.48 KB/sec download bandwidth. Your computer has been measured at 41.70 KB/sec. OK, so I thought "maybe it's time to shut off the torrents" and I did that both last night and now, but that didn't improve anything for my pal, Boinc, here. The thing is, I know for a fact that my bandwidth is a lot bigger than that. As proof, this is what I get when I run a couple of tests: - first, locally - then, all the way in the good ol' US of A (East Coast) Can anyone tell me what the heck is going on here?! How is this bandwidth calculated? As an average of all the tasks that I've downloaded? Is there a test on the server side each time before I download a task or what? Why is it still saying I only have 42KB/sec even without any other program downloading anything on my PC and how is it that I was able to download CEP2 tasks on this same computer, with torrents running, up until now? ![]() Knowledge is limited. As an average of all the tasks that I've downloaded? Yes, the client keeps a weighted average of your transfer-speeds for all files it's transferred, and includes the current averages on every scheduler-requests. Is there a test on the server side each time before I download a task or what? Why is it still saying I only have 42KB/sec even without any other program downloading anything on my PC and how is it that I was able to download CEP2 tasks on this same computer, with torrents running, up until now? ![]() Before the bandwidth-test for CEP2 was overlooked, as long as you've specified to download 2 or more CEP2-tasks at once, but this stopped working after WCG did their resent server-upgrade, and probably haven't added this functionality back in yet. As for the download-speed still being low, one possibility is if BOINC haven't downloaded any files since turning-off your torrent-client. Downloading some work from anything besides CEP2 can be enough to be over the limit again. One problem with WCG is that many of the tasks includes multiple files to download, and some of the files is very small, maybe only 1 KB or something in size. Just starting a download gives some extra overhead, and with so small files the measured speed will also be very low, and therefore drags down the average download-speed. CEP2 itself is mostly small files and getting CEP2 in one work-request can mean the download-speed is too low on the next CEP2-work-request... While it's possible to manually edit client_state.xml to increase <bwdown> under <net_stats>, just downloading some non-CEP2-work should likely be enough to get you over the limit. ![]() "I make so many mistakes. Before the bandwidth-test for CEP2 was overlooked, as long as you've specified to download 2 or more CEP2-tasks at once, but this stopped working after WCG did their resent server-upgrade, and probably haven't added this functionality back in yet. The bandwidth override was restored about 9 days ago. If you go to My Grid -> Device Manager -> Device Profiles and click on the profile you want to modify, then you can go to the bottom of the page and fine the setting called 'Number of workunits per host for The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2?'. If you set this to more than 1, then your computer will not be checked for the bandwidth setting. |

Thank you both a bunch! The explanations hit the nail on the head and the "workaround" did the trick. I've used that before, but never bothered to check the log. I bet at least once it was the same error.
