"Runtime Error!" - cannot figure out what the problem is

I am running Win7 SP1 with all the latest updates on a Core 2 Quad CPU @250 GHz, with 8GB of RAM, with BOINC installed on the 229 GB boot partition, with 20GB set aside for BOINC, and with 45GB of free space. I have BOINC Manager v6.10.18.

For roughly the last four months, when the program would start up I would occasionally get a useless error message. With it occurring nearly every time the program started, I finally gave up and simply shut the program down every time it started back up after I needed to reboot, because I didn't want to take a chance that it was corrupting system files.

I presume the error only occurs when one particular project that I am linked to starts... and then immediately ends, but I cannot figure out which. W7 kind-of ticks me off, because the Error message truncates the address, so there is no clear depiction of where the problem lies.

When that message occurred on the program starting (after 5 minutes of no user activity), this error [with it's message] also prevents the screensaver from starting. [Don't know if that helps, but figured I'd include it.]

The only program with a red line in the log was LHC@home, but disconnecting and reconnecting to their relatively new address didn't help. I posted a help request there, and the person helping there said that it wasn't them causing the problem.

I am sorry, I have had multiple head injuries, so I have a difficult time figuring out what should be included here and sometimes get overwhelmed trying to find files. Please let me know what additional information or files I need to include here to figure this out so I can get back to helping with projects.

If what I wrote already is adequate, are there any ideas what might help? Thank you!

I'd start by running the BOINC installer and take the Repair option (will also set any permissions correct again). Then if message returns, do a project reset. Could also be you need to run a disk-test for corrupt sectors.

edit: When it happens again, post a copy from the messages that get recorded in the stdoutdae.txt file, located in the BOINC data directory.

Re: "Runtime Error!" - cannot figure out what the problem is

Thank you VERY much!

I did the things you suggested in order. After doing the installer Repair option, the problem persisted. So I did a project reset for every project I was linked to [since it had been so long since BOINC functioned properly for me, I'd actually found that some had passed their 'expiration date'].

And, with project resets all around, I have not as yet seen the error message again, though BOINC has been active about 24 hours now. [The error message used to appear pretty much every time that the program became active.]

So again: thank you very much for your help! smile

Welcome to the WCG forum, Kirgo !

I am sorry, I have had multiple head injuries, so I have a difficult time figuring out what should be included here and sometimes get overwhelmed trying to find files...
(Emphasis, mine.)

I hope you meant that figuratively. In case you meant that literally, first things first, please take care of your health before engaging in any potentially stressful activity like crunching with 'stressful' to mean levels near or outside your level of health. Are you sure you are 100% OK? If so...

So again: thank you very much for your help! smile
(Where "you" and "your" refer to CA SekeRob.)

Glad to know the issue was resolved in your favor. Happy Easter! smile

They were literal head injuries. The last of them was over a decade ago, but I was left with permanent problems from them that still leave me easily overwhelmed and confused, and I have limited brain power I can use each day. [It is still sometimes frustrating for things like this when, prior to the first head injury, I assembled a computer from all its component parts and manually got Windows 95 to recognize them all (manually matching interrupts and such so they all 'fit' with the resources available)... so I know I USED to be able to manage things like this with ease. Now... not so much (if at all) without significant assistance. But I know everyone has their own 'life stuff' to deal with, so try not to stay 'down' about any of what I live with (and without).]

So again: thank you very much for your help! smile

Yes, thanks to SekeRob for the help steps... it has now been about three days and still no Error message return.

And thank you to you, andzgrid, for your kind health wishes and welcome to the forum. Happy Easter to you as well!

Well said and truly positive thinking. I reverberate with the positive energy there! Having read your assurances as to your health condition, I can now be more confident that the following should be a walk in the park for you: If a cruncher issue in a cruncher's OP (original post) was resolved to the satisfaction of the said cruncher, it is customary for that cruncher to edit the title under the said OP and append a "[RESOLVED]" (without the quotes).

Happy crunching!
