I have been doing the same thing for quite a while, shutdown BOINC, defrag the drive and restart BOINC and I've never had a problem or lost any tasks.

I usually exit BOINC before doing anything like defragging or registry cleaning, but I noticed defrag was doing something with BOINC. Is that a problem? "Is it save?" (the dentist asked) You need to explain what that something is that defrag is doing to BOINC. The program? The data? Neither important, data is data, the disk subsystem keeping track where the bits/sectors of a file are, not BOINC, so it's a non-problem. Many actually run scheduled defrags without stopping BOINC without incurring issue... I do too. --//-- edit: spelling [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Mar 29, 2012 6:27:40 PM] |

I think the Vista and 7 users would have chimed in quite a bit if it were an issue considering Windows defrags automatically by default now.

Yes, defrag is meant to work with other stuff running. Worst case, it skips defragging a file because it is in use at the time it tries to process it. Doing a defrag with nothing else running simply ensures completeness. I normally just suspend network and crunching activity via the Activity button rather than exit BOINC (suspended tasks are kept in memory).

Or, put in a SSD drive. No defragging needed.

For Linux there does not even exist a defragmenter [that I can find], ergo it's a non-issue.

Hello halfcard,
A long time ago I would exit everything before I defragmented (several times a year). I no longer bother. The few files in use will be skipped but that will not matter. Current practice is to automatically defragment every week. I checked my windows 7 system after 8 months early this year. Fragmentation percentage was very low, so I can forget about this. That is good since I have reached an age where I can't quite remember things that were automatically just there in my 20's.Lawrence |
