WCG configuration for EeePC

Hello,

I have a Asus Aspire One which is a EeePc that can use BOINC but it is very slow and I do use it a lot of time. I use it about 30 mns per day.

The problem is about work units because for a "Say No to Schistosoma" or "GO Fight Against Malaria" it will take about 44 hours to complete a workunit but with my usage it will take 88 days to finish one wu and as you know the deadline of workunits are about between 5 to 20 days.

So each workunit I send is expired.
So do you know if it is possible to configuration WCG settings to get a workunit with a far way deadline ? or does I have to forget using boinc on this eeePc ?

Thanks, Best Regards

Wilgard

Re: WCG configuration for EeePC

The two projects with the shortest wu are HCC and Clean Water. Even those would be too long for your machine if you only leave it on for 30 minutes per day and you are also working on it. The only alternatives I see for you are to leave the machine on for longer periods of time.

Anyone else have another solution ?

Cheers

Re: WCG configuration for EeePC

Hi,

Deadlines are there because they are part of batches which when live on the system take space and slow down the scheduler... batch completed are removed and uploaded to the scientist computer ASAP.

With so little system On-Time of your atom, can on recommend to select Help Conquer Cancer that have the shortest runtime, than Clean Water is the second shortest. All science average task durations are shown in this chart: http://bit.ly/WCGART for last day and 7 day average to help select on run time basis. Dont take HCMD2. That research is practically finished.

Re: WCG configuration for EeePC

If you run WCG on other, faster computers in addition to the netbook, you can set up different profiles.
For instance, make the netbook's profile "school" for HCC/C4CW and the other profile "home" for SN2S/GFAM.

Re: WCG configuration for EeePC

Worst case scenario, use it at CPDN where you have like a year deadline and can get credits as you are still crunching. If you are only running the machine 30 minutes a day for WCG, you will most likely not complete anything on time or very rarely. As others have suggested, either run it longer or change your science selection and hope for the best.

Re: WCG configuration for EeePC

While the atom processor in your Eee consumes only a very small amount of electrical energy I would think about let the Eee run 24 hours a day. I have an atom driven box too and some tasks take up to 100 hours and more. HCC tasks take up to 8 ... 9 11 hours.
With your usage (30 mins a day) I would stop crunching because you will miss any deadline.
