Re: Getting around Memory Restrictions

Its my oldest machine and used to run Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy. It runs Windows Millennium, but apart from its age its in perfect working order. I hesitated to throw it out in case it ended up in a landfill or something like that as I feel improper recycling of old PC's can damage the environment.

It looks like with the end of the Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy project its use to the WCC ended as well.

Thanks for the feedback.
Your profile doesn't state where you are located, if you're in the (western parts of the) USA, maybe I can find some modules that would get you to 128MB of RAM at least if you post what kind of RAM you have now and what possible options would be to upgrade...

Btw, you might just want to try at least to run SN2S, I just check on this machine that is crunching on those as well at each of the two WUs active is using about 25MB of RAM currently, not sure if there are times during the whole process where it uses more or if this depends on the batch of WUs...

Re: Getting around Memory Restrictions

For good measure, one time recently a tech responded to the question of work around in fiddles to BOINC. An emphatic "No" the reply netted to as given to lowering any requirements, even temporary for lighter requirement batches. Either a device meets the minima that will last for the entire project duration and set with biggest uses observed in testing plus a safety margin or these tasks are not assigned. WCG rightly does not want to send work to devices which in the margin one moment can and in the next moment cant meet the System Requirements [leading to for instance frequent "waiting for memory", or downright crash. Those in the margin often take quite a bit longer, and make the user suffer if BOINC were set to run when user is active [default No btw]. Users that get annoyed with BOINC tend to leave volunteer computing before investigating what the problem is and then unsell volunteer computing with others. We don't want to do that of course.
