Had a mess this afternoon. After getting it cleaned up I can't reattach to WCG. Message says an error has occurred and to look at the event log. The event log says it's fetching config file from WCG (actually says it twice) but nothing happens. I can attach to other projects. I'm stumped.

Well . . . Power down / power up router. Suspend all projects. Exit BOINC. Reboot. Exit BOINC. Try to rebuild BOINC. Reboot. try to reconnect to WCG. if that fails, try to disconnect from WCG. Try to reconnect to WCG. If that fails, describe your system to us and tell us what error messages it is giving. ![]() |

Try to reconnect to WCG. Done all that umteen times. I can't attach to WCG for some reason. I can attach to other projects. If that fails, describe your system to us and tell us what error messages it is giving. ![]() System is i7-860 @ stock. 4GB ddr3 ram. Win XP pro 32 bit. Running BOINC version 7.0.8, which has been running fine for weeks. Tried 6,10.58 too, same problem. Even deleted the hidden BOINC data folder so I could start from scratch. Have you tried disabling any AV programs and then try to attach?

From a working BOINC, grab this file: account_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml
----------------------------------------Back to the system where you got issues, paste that file. Make sure BOINC is not running before you paste it. Then run BOINC. It should all be good. This is what I do for my custom made MSI (Windows Installer). ![]() ![]() |

That's an interesting workaround, but still the fundamental difference between WCG and any other BOINC project is that a secure connection needs to be established. If this works, we'll add this to the compendium in the "cannot attach to WCG" part of the FAQ's.
BTW, the log indicated a user level install... the price of wanting GPU computing on Windows. On Linux this cannot even be done... always a service/daemon install, but GPU computing works. --//-- |

SekeRob, while this worked for me because I have multiple machines and have access to the file what about people who have only 1 cruncher? Is there a place where a copy of this file could be stored for on the website for others to use?

Glad the trick worked, though it's puzzling why it happened in the first place.
Plz mark thread as [RESOLVED] and insert "Cannot" at start of title. This will help the next who's got the same issue. --//-- |

Glad the trick worked, though it's puzzling why it happened in the first place. Very puzzling indeed. How my BOINC install on this machine got borked in the first place is also very puzzling. (To me anyway )Plz mark thread as [RESOLVED] and insert "Cannot" at start of title. This will help the next who's got the same issue. Done.

SekeRob, while this worked for me because I have multiple machines and have access to the file what about people who have only 1 cruncher? Is there a place where a copy of this file could be stored for on the website for others to use? There's been an FAQ for longer doing it the boinccmd tool way, and I've added X-files27 trick to that: http://bit.ly/a0vCme . At first thought of posting a copy in text form, but the file proofs complex, so not convinced if editing it is a good idea. For sure you could grab any copy from anywhere and insert your authentication code and restart BOINC, but why hack if it can be done as described in the FAQ, roman II. --//-- |
