Re: New CPU only for WCG

I have an i5 2600k and I'm loving it! It's what I could afford for a computer right now, and heck, couldn't even afford this one really, but got it anyway. Anyway, I'm loving the speed of this thing on projects like HCC and C4CW.

EDIT: Err, make that an i5 2500k. My mistake. My brain is fried today.

Emphasis mine, 2 Years ago that would have had credence ;>)

So, does that mean sooner rather than later? My colleague only does WCG, I am sure that he would like to know something before his next big rig, (you know the one with the twin Xeon's) so that he can accommodate anything coming.

Re: New CPU only for WCG

However energy consumption matters much more with GPU vs. CPU IMHO. Drawing 300+W 24/7 on one card is no joke.

There are ways to get very good performance without using that much power.
It just depends on how hard you want push the card.(aka a need for speed) biggrin

Re: New CPU only for WCG

I love this line about wait for the next whatever. There is always something in the pipeline and it will always be delayed no matter who the manufacturer is. The only time I'm buying a system and consider waiting is when they're shipping and not in stores yet. Then I only wait for the old hardware to drop in price and buy that.

Those that keep up to speed with the forums need least speculation: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/printpost_post,367292

Re: New CPU only for WCG

Thanks- Right, I don't have a lot of times for the forums, what with work, medical time commitments, etc. I depend on RSS feeds to see what is new.

So, thanks for the heads up.

I assume that I will be able to select the GPU option in my Profiles at My Grid so that my new machine will be able to contribute; but keep the other four machines crunching for WCG off of this option by use of the "No GPU code in the cc.config file in C:\Program Data\BOINC .
