confused How many active crunchers are there currently?

Being the curious creature that I am, here's a slew of questions that popped in to my mind:

- How many active crunchers are there currently? (stats is currently showing 587,614 members)*
- Is there a way (easy) to look this piece of info up?
- After how long of no activity is a cruncher considered as "inactive"?

On a side note, I know that WCG occasionally sends emails to members reminding them to participate (although I don't know after how much inactive participation this note is sent).

*I checked the BOINC page and it shows WCG with 375,288 users.

Thanks,
CJSL

Re: How many active crunchers are there currently?

Active member retention at WCG 24.6% **, active retention across BOINC world 12.1%... something must be more right up this alley.

** Of those ever starting to crunch on BOINC at WCG, not considering the old UD agent participants that did not port to BOINC.

Knowledgeable and helpful Community Advisors (backed up by helpful forum contributors in general) is definitely a plus. peace

Other than the reminder emails mentioned in the original post does WGC undertake any other work in the area of member retention?

mitrichr mentioned in another post There have been a number of conferences on the subject of volunteer computing. At most of them, the motivations are discussed.

Does anyone have a link to any posts on this subject?

Re: How many active crunchers are there currently?

Pete & SekeRob... thanks for the info. Now, according to BOINC:

WCG users = 375,288 (active = 92,262)

Which means that 24.58% stay to crunch at WCG (exactly what Sekerob reported). It does seem low, but is better than the 12.1% BOINC world active retention that SekeRob reported.

Next question: Why does WCG report 587,614 members and BOINC reports 375,288 users ? Different concepts?

Thanks,
CJSL

Re: How many active crunchers are there currently?

Plz reread my previous reply. There were some 200,000 that never made it to BOINC world.

SekeRob... ah, sorry, I didn't catch that part of your note... that explains the difference between WCG vs BOINC.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Hey, it's nice to be remembered. I do not remember any links at WCG, but at the BOINC project for the LHC at CERN, affectionately known as "T4T" , Daniel Lambrano let us know about the 2nd Citizen Cyberscience Summit , from which you can get to videos , wherein one of the topics is why do people do this crunching. It si quite an interesting phenomenon, with more motivations than I can count.

Earlier, there had been held Brazil@home , also a Citizen Cyberscience Summit. I do not know what or how much of that is still available.

Again, it's nice to be remembered.

Re: How many active crunchers are there currently?

Thanks all for participating in this thread... but I still have a question that doesn't have an answer:

- After how long of no activity is a cruncher considered as "inactive"?

and I'll add to that:

- How/Who/What determines that "inactivity"?

Thanks,
CJSL

Re: How many active crunchers are there currently?

BOINCstats looks at 30 days for host and member. i.e. if you returned a result 29 days ago, you're considered active.
