Extended Outage: Upgrading Server Software on March 6th from 14:30 UTC - 21:00 UTC [Completed]

World Community Grid uses the open source BOINC infrastructure to support the distributed processing of work performed by the computers provided by our volunteers. We are going to be updating this code to the latest version of the software on March 6th starting at 14:30 UTC.

This upgrade involves a number of changes. As a result, we are going to temporarily stop the system and take full backups before performing the upgrade. This will require us to stop things for up to 6.5 hours.

We appreciate your patience while we perform this change.

We have completed the database backup and installed the new software. Unfortunately, the changes to the database are taking longer than expected. There is a chance that this outage may last longer than originally planned.

At this time the system is receiving work and distributing new work. We are watching things at this point and will slowly bring up other items such as validation over the next several hours.

We have started up the validators and the system is up and running again. We will monitor your reports as well as look at the data in the system to identify issues and resolve them. We appreciate your patience during this work.

At the end of this change when we first started the system backup, there was an error in how some results were updated in the database. This caused an issue where a volunteers client thought the result was completed and reported, but the database was not updated to reflect this. This problem was corrected within an hour of being detected. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the error, we are unable to determine which results were impacted and we cannot recover them. As a result, they have been lost.

Many of these results are currently shown as 'in progress' on the result status page. They will be 'resent' to the clients the next time that they communicate with the server. We had disabled the 'resend' mechanism for a period of time while we tested different things. We have turned this feature back on and these results will be resent to the client going forward.

We sincerely apologize for the loss.
