FYI...we surpassed our total 2009 production back on Tuesday.
----------------------------------------I hope all is well with Dr. Mike. It looked like his numbers dropped off to one machine a while back and that may be off now too. Hopefully, he's found a fellowship he was talking about before and is just in the process of moving. |

Good Morning MOT Good catch there dkt. Too big of a hurry yesterday morning I guess. Anyway...not so bad this morning. Belated Congratulations to parmesian! I jumped on the CFSW in an unabashed badge hunting move. On a good day I can apply something approaching 80 cores to a problem but there are all sorts of mitigating circumstances. I should be able to get to Sapphire in about 10 days. Of course, with all the issues that come up with computers, that could go astray. And then there are some folks that have huge queues and slower machines and that tends to clog up the validations so perhaps 2 weeks is a more realistic expectation. I still cannot seem to get a HCC GPU Beta. I agree with Keith. Where are you Dr. Mike?? Everyone have a great day; no real reason not to. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 2 times, last edit by RT at Apr 20, 2012 12:39:41 PM] |

Yesterday I started getting a message that said Windows has found a problem with my hard drive and to back it up ASAP. I found a hard drive (actually my son found it after I asked him), and I tried making a system image to that drive but I am getting an error message saying it can't be done because the drive was not formatted with an NTFS (did I get that right?) directory. So... I will need to reformat with the right directory type. I have never had any experience with doing this with Windows 7 (XP was much easier). Any suggestions?

As I recall, your machines are Lenovos. Check if this message is from the Lenovo Thinkvantage Toolbox (aka PC Doctor). If you open the toolbox, find the specific error and look that up on their website, I believe it's just some bad sectors that can be fixed/addressed with a chkdsk at bootup.

Good Saturday Morning MOT Congratulations Blueprint! Keith's comment is likely quite relevant. Now as to your question. The way to format an external drive is to bring up "my computer" then right-click on the external drive in question (that you have previously attached to the computer) and choose format. IIRC it lets you choose which format you want and you can choose NTFS. Then you might be able to do your backup. Keith is likely right that a few sectors may have gone bad and that chkdsk can fix that. On the other hand, if this is the start of a continuing series of sectors going bad, it would be best to have the backup in the event you need to replace the drive. Of course, if you have the original operating system CDs and CDs for all installed programs, you would be able to recover the system in the event of a total meltdown. Now as to your data, you would of course have to have it backed up to some source. I back my data up across my LAN to a backup hard drive on another machine but you can do yours in many different ways including backing up your data files onto CD/DVD. Roxio and many other vendors often provide the software to do this or you can simply copy the directories directly using drag n drop or command line commands. Everyone have a great Saturday! |

Thanks all for the help. I did find the CONVERT command to change the file system to NTFS and then I was able to do a backup. I now have the backup scheduled to be done on the 28th of every month. In addition, this morning I went to the start menu and entered CHKDSK, and found "Defragment your hard disk" and see it is scheduled to run at 1:00 AM every Wednesday. If you go to "Tell me more about Disk Defragmenter", the "Windows Help and Support" page that is brought up has "See Check a drive for errors for more information", and going there provides enough information to allow you to check the hard drive for errors and attempt to correct them the next time you boot up.
Thanks again. ![]() |

Running CHKDSK X: /F /R would perform a full scan (including bad sectors) and attempt to fix them. (substitute the drive letter you want to check for the X). It will probably take a reboot for it to start.
