Sekerob-
----------------------------------------No, I did not even know about doing that. Thanks for the advice. |

A BOINC server code mod now allows to send a flag with a task if immediate reporting is desired [newer clients required]... such as the opportunity has come now to WCG to push the repair and Beta jobs ahead for reporting. --//-- Man we talked about that waaaaaay back when Boinc was in the early stages and I was still crunching for Seti! That is a MUCH needed thing for those units the projects need to send out because it came back invalid, or whatever, the first time. This will help clear out those units quicker!! ![]() ![]() |

Just a note of thanks for all those who came forward to give me a hand at getting this thing right. I am running 24/7.
----------------------------------------Three projects running GPU on Nvidia, my profile box checked for GPU at WCG. This thing flies, CPU temps are very low, GPU temps are very low. All is well in the Digiteria. |

Back one last time, here, to say thanks, I just tonight crossed 10 million credits. I could not be here without the help I received from WCG people.

@mitrichr: Congratulations on your newly-launched machine.
----------------------------------------But ... When GPU HCC gets under way, we may find it most productive to put our graphics cards into machines having fewer cores that are each very fast. What I am saying is that maybe HT should be turned OFF, or get the cheaper non-HT but highly overclockable chip. If the production WUs are like the betas so far, a large part of the elapsed time is spent using the CPU, with the super-fast GPU idle. To get the super-productive GPU working for a higher proportion of the time, we'll need to minimise that CPU time. In current hardware, that means a 2500K CPU or a 2600K with HT OFF. A 2500K costs about A$220 and a 2600K A$320 here (Australia). For 24/7 overclocks around 4500MHz, either would do. Because Sandy/Ivy Bridge overclocking is done with the CPU multiplier, you don't need a high-end motherboard. It just needs a reasonable CPU power regulator setup, but needs multiple PCIEx16 slots for your GPUs. Eg Asrock Z68 Extreme4 - around A$160. RAM? Cheap as chips. Speed not critical, 2GB total would do, but it seems to come as 2x2=4 these days. I recently paid A$39 for 4GB of 1600MHzC9. Spend up on an efficient PSU (80+), according to your GPU needs. Since you already have the 3930K, it's a bit late to think like this, and it would hurt to disable HT on 6 (real) cores. But if you're thinking about a 2nd machine, you might move your GPUs to one like the above and leave the 3930K to do CPU work. Don't buy just yet though, as it's probably worth waiting for IB. To get the super-productive GPU working for a higher proportion of the time, we'll need to minimise that CPU time. I have been wondering whether it makes sense to buy two (or more) low to moderate speed GPUs, such as the HD 7750 or 7850, rather than one of the high-end 7950 or 7970 cards. I want to get the maximum points per watt (and per dollar), and there may be no point in buying a card that sits idle much of the time, or else spending more to get a faster CPU just to keep it busy. The tradeoffs are not quite clear yet, and we will need more data before we can decide which is the best way to go. But it appears that the cards should be matched if you don't want to tinker with the .xml files, since BOINC automatically chooses the fastest one if there are more than one. (It chose my GT 430 over my GT 240, even though the latter has a higher clock and higher GFLOPS rating, probably because the GT 430 is compute capability 2.1 rather than 1.2). |

Hello Jim1348,
Did you set Use_all_GPUs to true? Dataman said it best here: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/...d,32827_offset,120#370689 Lawrence |

Hello Jim1348, Thanks, but I just want to use one at the moment, since I was Folding on the other. In fact, I was folding on both, but BOINC grabbed the GT 430 and kicked folding off of that one, so I don't have much choice at the moment. This is just for the beta test anyway, and the real decisions will come when I build a new Ivy Bridge machine in a few months.Did you set Use_all_GPUs to true? I made all of my decisions based upon the advice i got here and the material I found at projects experienced in GPU work: GPUGrid, SETI, and MilkyWay.
----------------------------------------I must say, having gone from about 9-11,000 credits per day to 150,000-180,000 per day, I am quite happy with what i have got. If I were to buy a second machine, I would duplicate the first. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by mitrichr at Mar 28, 2012 11:23:26 PM] |
