Re: Looking for advice on GPU crunching on a new machine

If you want to do a lot of tweaking and babysitting, then yes SETI is an option. I find drivers constantly resetting to be rather annoying.

Hmm, haven't had this problem for a very long time, but granted this is on the Ati/Amd-side of things, so it's possible you're just hitting yet another nvidia-problem.

Re: Looking for advice on GPU crunching on a new machine

Wow. I still find it mildly shocking that so many people fork out so much cash just to have more machines to crunch work units. I have one machine. Well, 2, but the other one doesn't work. I always only have just one working computer. I don't even own a laptop yet. I just have no need for more than one. *sigh*

On a side note, if any of ya wanna still put that money to good use, lemme know. I take donations for my Help Me Get Out Of Debt Fund. :)

I started playing with computers when I was in High School, I am now 59 years old! Over the years I have gone to the hardware side building my own pc's and rebuilding other peoples pc's. When I rebuild a friends pc I usually get their old parts as 'payment' instead of cash. I have 14 machines here at home running all crunching right now. BUT I have 14 MORE sitting on the floor that could be crunching within a few days! My problem is lack of power circuits, more pc's and I keep blowing the breakers as I am near the limit! I have 'parts' from WAAAY back when and of course some newer ones too. I even have some O-L-D 20 MEGABYTE hard drives laying around I need to drill holes in before they go out to the recycling. I STILL pick up pc's on the side of the road all the time, I used to donate my older pc's to the local Welfare Agency for the Foster Kids but they ran out of money and stopped the project. I would put Linux on them add a dvd drive, drop in memory, speakers, etc and the kids would have SOMETHING to call their own!! Before the kids got the pc's I would crunch on them for a week just to make sure all was okay, I would have to turn one of my own pc's off today to do that.

I started crunching LONG before Boinc was even thought of, for Seti Classic, and have never looked back. Over time I have grown to where I am and even incorporated gpu's into all of my desktop pc's. Give it time and you too can do the same! here are some of my stats as of today:
Total credits 706,970,248.59
Credits today 2,320,623.24
% of total project credit 0.08362%
Position based on total credit 101 out of 2,343,879
More credits than % of all project users 99.99573%
Position based on average credit 54 out of 2,343,879
First seen on December 17, 1999, 10:04 pm
Completed Seti Classic Workunits 62,118
Seti Classic CPU hours 383,036

The key is too crunch, just crunch and keep on crunchin'!! Rome was not built in a day, nor were my stats!! And BELIEVE me when I tell you I am FAR from the person to have crunched the longest or fastest!!

Re: Looking for advice on GPU crunching on a new machine

O.K., the new box is here, I am setting things up. I have installed BOINC and attached to WCG.

Now, I am ready to put in the cc.config file. On my other computers is in a BOINC folder in Program Data. I saw no Program Data file, so that was why I installed BOINC and started a project, hoping that would create a Program Data folder, but that has not happened.

So, any help? What do I do next?

I can of course attach to some other project running BOINC, like Milky Way. But I want to get things right, so I want to get the cc.config file copies in.

Thanks.

Have you told Windows to show hidden files and folders? The program data folder will be typically hidden by default.

You might want to also add this to your cc_config.xml file:

<cc_config>
<options>
<report_results_immediately>1</report_results_immediately>
</options>
</cc_config>

This will report a finished work unit as soon as it is completed. I know GPUGrid.net grants bonus points for finishing a workunit within a certain time period.

On Win7 it is in C:\ProgramData\Boinc. If you press the ALT key you can then go into Tools then folder options and unhide the system folders, then you can get to it. Be quick, pressing ALT only brings up the toolbar for a short time, then it auto hides again.

Just *not* a good idea [it increases server load], and at GPUGrid they [should] know that as this affects *all* projects associated to a client. A BOINC server code mod now allows to send a flag with a task if immediate reporting is desired [newer clients required]... such as the opportunity has come now to WCG to push the repair and Beta jobs ahead for reporting.

In Win7 you can also hit the start button and type hidden files and folders in the search pane. That will give you more time to get there. While you in there also look for a check mark next to something that says hide file extensions of know files or something similar to that( i'm not home to check exactly what it says) and remove the check mark. That will allow you to edit config and xml files if needed.

nanoprobe-

If you are replying about my whining about BOINC in Program Data, yes, I took care of it. You would think I would learn. This is my sixth Win7 machine, I have been caught in the Hidden Files and File Extensions traps set by MSFT every time.

Re: Looking for advice on GPU crunching on a new machine

Coleslaw-

Thanks so much. I am primarily interested in the science, especially CEP2 and the T4T project at CERN. But, hey, everyone has an ego. I had wanted to get to the 99th percentile for all of BOINC and I did that. I am sure that with a hyper threaded six core CPU, I do not need to even think about credits.

@ mitrichr - go for the 99.99 th percentile !!! get MORE multi core- HT machines !!! devilish
