Although my PC is less that 2 months old, I have been advised by the makers that it would be best for me to carry out a complete system recovery. My dear 10 year old Grandson downloaded something he was told would help him with his MP3 player - I was not around at the time - and it contained a virus which I cannot delete no matter how I try.
When I have the new system up and running, I will obviously be returning to the WCG to recommence my crunching duties. Can someone assist me as to what would be the best way to recommence where I left off, ie with the same user name, team, points etc, so that I do not lose what I have. Advice to anyone using their PC for MP3 recording etc - Keep Clear of the IMesh syatem, or anything to do with it. It is Lethal. Thanks in anticipation. |

You can simply reinstall the World Community Grid agent and use the same member name and password. This will let you keep your prior points. You will, however, lose the work already performed on the current work unit. Our servers handle missing work just fine, so the only real loss will be some points in your account. Sorry to hear about the virus.

Hi, I had the same problem too, except mine was about the boot screen, and not a virus (I tweaked the boot screen a bit too much and it wouldn't boot at all... lol). You can find the thread I was talking about this in the past here . It's a simple concept if you have backed up. Just redownload the WCG installer, and backup the entire WCG directory in the Program Files directory after you have stopped WCG. Then do the System Recovery, and reinstall WCG from the install program. Now you have two options. The easy but not as effective is to just continue the installation like usual, but click the already a member checkbox, then your username, and you will continue from there. (not recommended). The other not so easy method (which takes some skill) is to right after you just installed WCG, DONT start up WCG. Instead, restore your backed up WCG directory to the current directory, overwriting everything.(recommended) That should (literally) put you back to where you were when you last quit the WCG, percentage, device id, username and all. I've done it before, and some others too, but sometimes you lose the work unit, because it is tricky. Not really a problem since you just download another wu anyways! I hope this helps. Good luck.

To Peter 2005:
----------------------------------------That is one of the risks for downloading from Peer To Peer Networks. People put make viruses and such to do malicious things. Possible solutions for an infected Computer are: Use Anti Virus Programs (Norton Anti Virus is Highly Recommended, You can get it as "Norton Internet Security Professional" which has both Antivirus and Firewall.; Formatting the Hardrive if for some reason, the Antivirus Program cannot get rid of it, First however send in the Infected file to Norton in the Quarantine Section of the Norton Antivirus Program.; If the file cannot be deleted try restarting your computer and pressing "F8" button constantly, well at the black screen before windows load. A list Will Appear, you then select "Boot In Safe Mode with Command Prompt" and try to delete from there[type:"C:\ or whatever the Drive name which the Folder containing the Virus File is located on and press "Enter" key. Then type"cd", place a space inbetween "cd" and the directory name. Then Type the Directory name where the bad file is in and press "Enter" key. To view the files in the directory and get the actual name of the Virus file type: "Dir/p" and look for the file name. Once you know the name type: "Del"(put a space between the Command "Del" and the Virus File name") "place the file name and press "Enter" key. Using System Restore may be damaging because the virus may implant itself then the System Restore made a backup of it, still, they have other earlier restore points usually(you can set how many there are) which may not have made a backup of it. "Imesh"[There are Better Ones out there, Imesh itself Has spyware And/Or Adware in the program itself, means- Bad stuff for you.] is a type of "Peer To Peer" Program (People Use Peer To Peer to share Files: Programs, Movies, Music files Etcetera.) Also It is Illegal in many countries to share files. Millions of people use it because they do not believe in the the laws banning it. Important: Many of the people who share files believe their rights are being infringed upon. A person buys a DVD Movie then shares it on the Peer To Peer networks, He/She is seen as breaking the law. However to the person; He/She see it as his/her right to do with whatever he/she wants, afterall he/she paid for it. The creators of the movie spent time(Some of their Life) making the movie and the people who bought it spent time(Some of their Life) making the money to buy it. It is their Matter(Noun) when they buy that DVD Disc including the information. People who share Movies and so on believe the Creators who made the Stuff(Programs,Movies,Music etcetera) must always get the recognition for creating the stuff, that is for example; No one else may say they created it. They disagree with the so called "Intellectual Property Rights" Laws when it comes to Sharing files. The people, who share files on Peer To Peer networks do not make any profit from the stuff they share, and Always give Credit to the Creators, even the individuals who crack the programs to allow a person to use it say that "if you, the user, like the program, to support the creators and actually go buy the software in the store. Furthermore File sharer incure expenses such as: Electricity, Wear and Tear on components etcetera. If your Gandson or you want to continue using Peer To Peer programs get a better one such as the following and download the free software with no Spyware And/Or Adware in it: http://emuleplus.info/ Or go to the following Website which has a list of different Peer To Peer Programs. It rates them and tells if they contain Spyware And/Or Adware: http://www.zeropaid.com/ Post Script; Emphasize; I do not Say I support Peer To Peer programs nor are against them. I will keep my belief (opinion) to myself. http://imminst.org http://www.mprize.org http://www.gen.cam.ac.uk/sens/ [Edit 6 times, last edit by Former Member at Jul 16, 2005 11:33:29 AM] |
