Hi, I am in need of a new pc. I play some games, but not too much. The system will be probably crunching 24/7 minus when I play games that are too much for it (which should be minimum). I used to keep up to date with the latest hardware, but I have lost touch.
----------------------------------------Can someone tell me if the internal video chipset is good enough for crunching? For games like sin of a solar empire? Currently thinking of getting the I7, not sure which one yet. Don't really have a budget, just trying to see what I can get by with. ![]() |

Just get the items that are in my sig. :) They crunch just fine, and rather well, and the video card (ATI Radeon) is better for crunching than most or all nVidia's.

Is the AMD A8-3870k Llano an option? It's an APU(CPU and GPU in a single chip) for about 130 dollars.
----------------------------------------The integrated GPU in it is pretty good. The CPU is a quad core and both CPU and GPU can be overclocked easily. The GPU also has 480 gflops of compute power. I read and watched that it can run Battlefield 3 in medium settings. It will surely run Sins of a solar empire(my dual core 4 year old laptop with an integrated intel GMA can run it just fine). The GPU for the Radeon HD 6770 puts out about 1360 GFlops, and that's not overclocked. I got mine new for about $115 US.
----------------------------------------Here's a short and one of the easier explanations of why AMD GPUs are better at doing the same type of mathematical calculations than a nVidia GPU: http://chanmingman.wordpress.com/2012/01/14/w...-faster-than-nvidia-gpus/ There's another link at the bottom of that article that gives a much more detailed explanation, but I don't think that link is currently working, even though it was a couple days ago. Also, I've read the ATI Radeon HD 6770 1GB will run Battlefield 3 in maxxed out settings with absolutely no problem. Take it for what it's worth, as I don't play it. After posting the above, I decided to see if I could find something about it's gaming ability: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FOnGJ6n1hM Hope that helps. ![]() i5-12600K (3.7GHz), 32GB DDR5, Win11 64bit Home [Edit 1 times, last edit by Bugg at Feb 10, 2012 10:57:29 PM] |

April is when the new crop of EXPENSIVE cards/processors come out again. From what your original post said, it sounds like you'll be doing the occasional game and mostly grid computing. If that's the case, and you wanna "get by" as you said, then the Radeon HD 6770 1GB will be more than enough, and the higher end AMD (Radeon) cards will be even better if money's not an issue. Remember, Radeon works JUST FINE for gaming, but if you GOTTA have the best for gaming, then go nVidia. But again, if it's mostly for grid computing, go with Radeon. No comparison really.

If you want to maximize crunching I would wait for Ivy bridge to be released, if only for the Sandy Bridge price drop.
----------------------------------------If you just want a normal PC with good gaming capacity and some crunching potential I would wait for Trinity to be released, again if only for the llano price drop. Regarding the H61 chiptset, it most likely runs Sins of a Solar Empire and other similar games well. How many BOINC projects support ati and how many support nvidia?
----------------------------------------I think there are more projects to choose from if you go with nvidia for now until ati comes up with something as robust as cuda. 2 cents EDIT: When you get your new cpu make sure it has AVX (Advanced Vector Extensions). Some project have started including apps that utilize this and the increase in speed is amazing. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Feb 11, 2012 12:47:07 AM] |
