Any experience with APC PowerChute Personal and BOINC?

Purchased an APC XS1500 UPS to protect a recent build from power outages.
The only option available is to put the PC to sleep if the UPS battery is low during a power outage.
It is not a problem if the UPS stops BOINC when the power fails and the UPS battery is low.
I would prefer that to possibly corrupting the OS due to an ungraceful shutdown.
Does the PC resume BOINC processing when the PC awakes?
If it waits for a login or does not resume processing I will be an unhappy camper.

I have an APC XS 1000 but have not yet had a power outage long enough to drain the battery. However, with BOINC installed as a service you don't need to login for BOINC to start. As far as the OS becoming corrupted, I have not had that problem with W7.

Looks like I will have to try a simulated power failure on a weekend.

I recall that there is an issue with running BOINC as a service, it runs in its own limited account space and cannot detect the GPU.

My APC's will shut my system's down. I've always had to restart them myself (start button).

Not sure how you'd set it to auto restart when power resumes.

Boinc in the startup folder?

Re: Any experience with APC PowerChute Personal and BOINC?

The present estimated run time is 36 minutes.
As the options are set now the APC UPS and software will put the PC to sleep when 5 minutes of battery remain.
If the outage is less than around 31 minutes the PC will crunch on with no interruption.
if it enters sleep it does not start automatically you must use the start button.
This scheme prevents corrupting the filesystem/OS if power was lost during a disk write operation.
Also saves memory to disk so that work can resume where it left off.
This is vastly superior to what I had, which is an old UPS without shutdown software that runs until the battery is depleted.

Thanks for the replies deltavee and PecosRiverM, they were helpful.

CPUID Hardware Monitor displays the APC UPS data along with the PC hardware.
Battery voltage to 2 decimal places, load power in watts, battery level in percentage.
Isn't that special?

Re: Any experience with APC PowerChute Personal and BOINC?

Yeah I have a APC back ups xs-1000.

If it does lose power everything shuts down properly once the battery gets too low. So bionic workunits aren't corrupted nor the OS.

It works like a charm especially if you get some brownout or a power outage that lasts a week. Fun fact last power outage the amount of voltage coming through the lines was like five volts. So I could have used the ups tower that was still reading voltage to power up some devices like my cell phone. Sadly I had this revelation on the last day of the power outage.

I was even able to charge my 3DS in several hours using the upc tower which was like I said getting five volts from the power line.

Re: Any experience with APC PowerChute Personal and BOINC?

In Georgia I can safely say that AC power is anything but dependable.
A UPS is mandatory here.
Especially in the winter and spring.
Surprising how many large oaks and pines come down each year due to the weather.
However, the longest outage was just 1 day.
An outage longer than that would be rough.

Thanks for the info on the APC.
