If you REALLY want to install X (and add unnecessary load IMHO) you can just enter
----------------------------------------sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktopBUT be prepared for one hell of a download (ie several hundred MB worth) and a fair bit of time waiting for the system to churn it's way through the installation. I don't recommend it, but it is possible. ![]() Currently being moderated under false pretences |

I'll abstain from it. I'm an underclassman in a Networking / Sys Admin major, so eventually I'm going to be expected (and paid, I hope...) to know all of this stuff anyway. Besides, I live out of my laptop right now and 99% of my interaction with the Linux machine is through puTTY.

I'm doing pretty much the same thing, but I live in Linux and only touch Windows when I have no choice. My main desktop is running Slackware 13.37 64bit (with multilib ) and then rest of my hardware is a mix of Ubuntu desktop and server editions on everything from a laptop to old dual socket server hardware. Ubuntu Server has been great as a set-and-forget crunching OS.

jfreshman,
Never give up too quick... the message logs [we always like a to see a copy] usually give good indication whats needing to be addressed or in what direction we need to research the issue. The 64 bit issue [having had to install 32 bit libs] is a well known case for Linux. At the very least you would have received Computing 4 Clean Water work units [if "All projects" was selected in the device profile]. That has a 64 bit compile for all pure AMD64 platforms [those that cant have 32 bit libs installed] and WCG is working on several more 64 bit ports [unknown ETA]. Based on what we now know about C4CW, these run 5-8 percent faster for most. Not all, as for some the 32 bit version outperforms the 64 bit builds. Because of this, there will be a future implemented test for each ported science to discover which of the 2 is speedier before permanently assigning one or the other to a client. The server software upgrade is one of the conditions needed to be met for that. I'm using TightVNC for [GUI] connect to the Linux box. Not yet advanced to remote terminal logging. Anyway, Good to see your client is buzzing now. When happy, then please edit the opening post title to insert [RESOLVED]. Maybe insert also the 64 bit indicator for later readers who have same issue. --//-- P.S. D.A., no worries about fun of me English, comma missing before the "whilst being chef", was indeed during the cuisine trial :D . Appreciate your "from down under" help... Linux skilled, support members on the board are in short supply. |
