Before end of last year I was crunching to contribute to improve things for humanity.
Sure humanity is a big thing, but somewhat a fuzzy concept. If I look at the projects, Aids, Malaria, Cancer, Water, Energy, Muscular Dystrophy, Leishmaniasis, Dengue..... thanks god until recently I was not really concerned, I mean myself or my family.

But during the second half of last year my wife was diagnosed with a skin melanoma cancer. A very rare form were the melanoma is transparent (completely depigmented and and not stained or dark couloured as usual), and thus not really detectable, and often wrongly diagnosed. It can remain lurking dormant as a very small clear spot for long time and then start to degenerate.
I can tell you the one week wait for the final results was a difficult week. It was confirmed as malignant at stage 2. This means that you can get rid of it through surgery albeit extensive. The net result was a big fear and a nice scar. I felt really the cancer bullet that zipped by and missed us at least for now and hope forever.
But this experience has rendered that fuzzy humanity concept much more concrete, and now I know why I crunch.
