When we eventually (Happy New Year) get around to going BETA with GPU, will we have a separate BETA Opt-in?
Myself, and maybe others, would be happy to go BETA with GPU, but, I might not wish to get other BETA WUs for CPU. Of course if there is only GPU BETA and no CPU, then, a single selection of BETA will suffice...... ![]() |

You're welcome, Scribe.
There is also this matter of how the WCGhighCommand views the GPU in relation to the CPU, and from there -- where they want to take the GPU going forward. A decision on that would influence the following particulars: 1] Will there be a "GPU support" heading created in the forums? 2] Will the statsData from GPU-based WUs be merged with the current CPU-only based statsData? 3] Will there be a separate badgeSystem for crunchers who do GPU-based WUs? 4] Will there be a separate metric, mechanism, or procedure to gauge, handle, operate and maintain the output from GPU-aware WUs? The WCGhighCommand may want to use the beta-channel to test the above ideas, apart from testing the GPU-aware WUs -- before committing to a decision. To help make the launch of GPU-computing in WCG come as early as humanly possible, I propose that all crunchers with a GPU participate in the GPU beta-channel and give WCG a free hand and without penalty to test ideas. The "without penalty" means that, the participating cruncher waives his/her would-have-earned GPU beta-credits (badge, points, resultsReturned, runtime) if during the GPU beta-testing -- these GPU beta-credits somehow got lost, messed-up, or mangled. ; |

Looking at the other project that have both CPU and GPU, the ones I have tried seem not to differentiate between the two. To my way of thinking the 'downside' penalty would be on the GPU and the badge situation. Elapsed time on GPU per WU is likely to be much less, however, more WU's will be handled per 'day'.....so maybe it evens out. If the points/credits are awarded on the 'work-done', ie the WU then if the GPU does more WU than CPU then it deserves the points per WU just the same as the CPU.....

From reading everything I can find in all the different threads I am under the impression, ie guessing, that when WCG releases work for the gpu it will be a new phase of a current project, not a continuation of the current phase. I have not seen where they have actually said one way or the other, other than it will be an 'opt in' check box. ![]() ![]() |
