More machines! More!

OK, I admit it... I've gone a little stir-crazy for science.

Remember that newsletter WCG sent out about wanting to get another 100,000 devices on the grid before the end of the year? I, ah... may have taken that challenge a tad seriously.

Since that announcement, I have added seven workstations to my fleet (with two more on the way) courtesy of my workplace, and another four (with three more on the way) courtesy of a client site, and another one courtesy of my parents. Mind, all of these are added with permission of the machine owners... but I just can't seem to stop myself! smile

I have also managed to establish a permanent SSH tunnel (using Plink as a Windows service) to one site and a VPN tunnel to the other, just so I can manage and track all my machines from a single console. Which was a very interesting project, in and of itself.

And still I just want to keep adding more and more machines to the grid. Forgive me for being a bit loony, but I'd like to crunch as crazy as I feel. biggrin Not to worry, though--I'm sure the craze will die off sooner or later. It generally does, but at least then the machines will still be there crunching away and contributing to science. At least until they die.

So what drives you, TXR13: the prospects of a win or the thrill of the chase? Either way, kudos to your 'addiction', I mean, efforts... wink

Ha, that's difficult to say. laughing And largely, I'd say it depends on your definition of a "win". I don't particularly want or need personal recognition, on the level of "your machine crunched the magic WU!"

I'd consider a "win" to be a result that helps everybody. That's why I crunch WCG, after all. We've got projects with tangible results, practical stuff to help humanity. Not knocking SETI, but I like to give more attention to our own situation down here. Common man stuff.

In that sense, then, I'd love to get a "win" in a massive way. But at the same time, what good is a journey if you can't enjoy the trip? I personally enjoy working around massive numbers of computers. And if I can set them up to run automatically, doing their work for humanity with a minimal amount of tinkering needed from me, so much the better. cool

Welcome to the party then! The "W" in WCG is the "w" in win ; thus, WCG = Winner's Community Grid ! wink

Not knocking SETI...
Right, somebody has to look for aliens so knocking SETI would be a bad idea. biggrin
