Fans are cool
----------------------------------------:-) The GT 430 is good at the price. Check it on Amazon too, as they can be cheaper there. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Hardnews at Dec 20, 2011 2:41:08 PM] |

...as I have a 'test-bed' with available NVIDIA & ATI to compare when we do go to GPU, I will wait before deciding which to buy......I am puzzled by the difference between the two at Milkyway tho'

From what I have heard/seen, Milkyway and Collatz seem to favor ATI. YMMV I guess.

I don't mind what other people use, of course, but for me, I want to plug stuff into Linux and have it work within ten minutes. At the moment and my level of skill, that means Nvidia. Other people have no problems with ATI and Linux, of course. Your choice.
----------------------------------------Certainly, when/if WCG tasks move to GPU computing there will be a whole ocean of new stats from users. The only question, is how long to put off the purchasing decision? [Edit 1 times, last edit by Hardnews at Dec 24, 2011 8:42:54 AM] |

.....of course the other question is "can you have 2 types of card in at the same time, with the monitor plugged into just one of them?" Being a novice at GPU I have no idea!

Yes, I believe so. For the purposes of self-flagellation and to quash further metaphysical claims of ATI v. Nvidia, here's a review of folder-some GPUS.

......of course the other question is "can you have 2 types of card in at the same time, with the monitor plugged into just one of them?" BOINC by default uses the "most capable gpu", so you'll probably need to add the option <use_all_gpus> to a cc_config.xml file. If you are not familiar with that user provided file, there is a FAQ at http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?langu...90ef874ffa91920758b3d4b4f. Some people have had problems on other projects with widely different cards, but I don't know the details. There are also options in that FAQ to not use a specific GPU. |
