After reading this thread
----------------------------------------https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,32185 I think that some questions have to be answered. When a company decides to put WCG as a standard app on all their computers, PC, laptops etc... that's excellent. I would love that mine does it too. If the company registers a team in its name, to collect the points that have been generated by all it's hardware it is perfectly right and legitimate to do so make it visible. I have a problem with the case related to Sony Vaio Team. This team is in the top 50 teams overall and if look to yesterday's score Sony Vaio Team ranks 7 with over 6 million ppd. An excellent score. If Sony has decided to pre-install WCG/Boinc app as default in their laptops, PC's etc. I think it is an excellent initiative and it would be excellent too for the customer to have it known. Sony could do rightly some advertising on this initiative they have taken and I have no issue with that. BUT and it is a big BUT, and it is related to the hardware that Sony sells on the market to the general public and not about the company's own hardware. The question is: Does Sony give to every purchaser of a computer that has WCG pre-installed, in the setup phase a clear choice either to crunch with results going to Sony Vaio Team, or to set up an account at WCG in the purchaser name and let him collect the points, results etc. on his account. He can then become member of the Sony Vaio Team if he wishes. The process must be very clear. I ask this question first because I do not know the answer, I have no recent Sony Vaio computer, that had WCG pre-installed. There would be a problem if Sony Vaio Team does collect points generated by the customers computers and at their financial expense. The customer bought the computer and pays the electricity to run that computer. The thread above gave me the impression that things were somewhat fuzzy. I think a clarification would be welcome. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Hypernova at Dec 9, 2011 9:27:58 PM] |

I personally believe SONY did not mean to be unethical in any way. I think the reason they went about it in such a way was so that it could be a "set and forget" simplistic setup for most users. I think many more people would allow WCG/BOINC to run if it wasn't so confusing for them. I have many borged systems (with permission) where the owners didn't care about the software or what goal it was trying to achieve. But, as long as it didn't tear anything up or slow it down when they needed it, they didn't mind sharing their resources.
----------------------------------------Being "clear" on anything DC'ing to a non-techie is near impossible. Especially when you try to do it during your first setup or in a program that doesn't have a way to discuss the topic. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

After finding this article http://www.thecmuwebsite.com/article/boinc-reportedly-signs-up-sony-and-warner/ , I think there will be even more confusion. Since SONY will be affiliated with two different pieces of software that are very similar in names. One is BOINC and the other Boinc.

I wonder if WCG Admin has an opinion on this "delicate" issue.

I wonder if WCG Admin has an opinion on this "delicate" issue. ![]() Probably not. They just want to see the projects run and done. Who or what gets credit is a moot point. JMHO

I don't really care, but I do find it interesting that a cruncher that does not use Sony Vaio products has an 'ethical dilemma' with the contract that WCG made with Sony regarding pre-installing what others would generally call 'bloatware' on Sony's products.
It's no different than Symantec loading NAV on HP products. Not your call. |

yes I agree astrolabe its about the same as all the other pre loaded bloat ware that is installed and running when you get a new computer...
