Re: GFAM: Results on AMD-FX Inconclusive?

@kateiacy: I would expect that it is possible that versions of Windows not completely up to date may have a default of "intel" if the if the family/model/step information provided is not found.

I can not speak for Windows but I suspect it works similar to Linux in this area, ie: during boot, it will grab the type 4 record(s) out of the System Management BIOS area - these records identify the processor and features.

An example of the code used to pull information out of the SMBIOS area can be found in the Linux kernel source tree in module smapi.c

Re: GFAM: Results on AMD-FX Inconclusive?

@knreed: First, thank you for the information. But I am a little confused. One of the benefits of getting old I guess.

I am running Linux on an FX8120 and a bunch of Phenom II systems.

The Phenom II systems validate OK - the FX8120 does not.

So it would appear that there is more going on here than the FX being misidentified as an Intel processor when running Windows.

Don't think a CPU is misidentified. The data does not match in quorum and the post analysis finds that the FX result matches Intel computed output when run under Windows, but under Linux matches the results of other AMD processors. Thusly, an additional HR split needed to be created segregating how to pair hosts under Windows v Lunix for the FX. Seems the jury is still out on the other AMD result matching problem.

edit: From past tech comments, setting up HR groups beyond platform [OS] matching is a grand manual exorcize.

The AMD's 2nd work unit also went invalid:

Re: GFAM: Results on AMD-FX Inconclusive?

PMH_UK,

For that workunit, here are the specs for the computers that were declared valid:

Microsoft Windows 7 x64 Edition, Service Pack 1, (06.01.7601.00)
AuthenticAMD AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 955 Processor [Family 16 Model 4 Stepping 3]

Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise x86 Edition, Service Pack 1, (06.01.7601.00)
AuthenticAMD AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor [Family 16 Model 4 Stepping 3]

Yours:

Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition, Service Pack 4, (05.00.2195.00)
AuthenticAMD AMD Athlon(tm) proswssor [x86 Family 6 Model 10 Stepping 0]

I'll take a look to see if there is a general trend for the Athlon's.

Re: GFAM: Results on AMD-FX Inconclusive?

We have made another change that should resolve this issue on new workunits that are sent out.

I used to crunch, ages ago, with an AMD "prosessor", so this not reading the name correctly is not a new thing.

Re: GFAM: Results on AMD-FX Inconclusive?

I suspect the processor is a Athlon/Sempron of the Skt-A variety. They have been known to have issues with certain projects. I retired two Sempron machines last year to avoid problems that would delay work being successfully returned. I return results much faster now and my electricity bill went down. You may want to consider either deselecting GFAM and DSFL in your profile or upgrading to more up-to-date hardware if you continue to have issues.

Re: GFAM: Results on AMD-FX Inconclusive?

@Agrfan - the original post deals with the AMD Bulldozer/FX line of processors - the new architecture released by AMD just a few months ago ...

Re: GFAM: Results on AMD-FX Inconclusive?

Agreed. I just wanted to respond to the later posts related to Athlon processors being identified as [x86 Family 6 Model 10 Stepping 0]. That problem is totally unrelated to the original problem with AMD Bulldozer/FX processors. I probably should have noted that point. Thanks for the clarification.

I am watching this post closely since I am contemplating adding a AMD Bulldozer to my arsenal. I am currently crunching GFAM and DDDT-2. It looks like a Intel i5/i7 is a better choice right now.
