Hello !
I have 4-core system . 1 core operating at 100% 24/7 , while 3 others are not used at all . When i starting BOINC client - it says that cpu usage is too high and suspends all computations . Setting affinity to only 3 cores for the client in task manager did not help : for each task client opens a new process and closes them when system suspended. In BOINC client I have 2 projects added : WCG and climatprediction.net . How can i make the client work with 3 free cores ? Thanks in advance ! |

go to the web site and under "Device Manager", click on the profile for your machine and change the number of processor you allow WCG to use.
----------------------------------------"On multiprocessors, use: 100 processors" Change 100 to 75 you can also just do it by opening up BOINC and clicking under perferences. It will open up a new window. Under the "processor usage" tab you will see "On multiprocessors, use at most use: 100.00 % of the processors" Change the 100 to 75 ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by anhhai at Nov 15, 2011 5:24:54 PM] |

For a quad, set "On multi-processor systems..." to 75% either local or on website... When on website, your client needs to communicate first before it will take effect... immediate.
What you see is another value that is set at 25%. WCG uses 50% for new members, so that will markedly reduce the pauses. Most don't need the "While processor use is less than... 25%", so suggest you try it at zero (disabled). Using manual affinity control is rather pointless for as you noticed, the client will ignore it on next task and just assign the job to a free core. Some tools like Process Lasso can automate that, but it is dangerous to allow more cores in BOINC than assigning affinities i.e. using 4 cores in BOINC and assigning all tasks to just 3 cores makes 1 core go idle. So if you want to use just 3 cores and control their affinity, then only use 75% of processors for BOINC. --//-- |

Thank you for fast response !
After setting the processors use to 75% and processor use to zero - I've noticed that the system is "too sensitive" to it's usage : computations are stopped even when i move my mouse ! When I used this last time (a couple of months before) it worked all the time unless the CPU load was really heavy (games, archiving , ect.) . I've tried to set "work when computer is in use" - but it prevents work from stopping during gaming , reducing performance . Is there a way to resolve this or I'm just too greedy ? :) |

There is the 3rd option on processor tab that says to allow computing "While the computer is in use". Think the default is to not allow that. If that's off, the mouse or keyboard input will pause BOINC immediately (provided the Activity menu option is set to "Run based on preferences"). My laptop is set to "Run Always". The processor selections still remain in force with that i.e. 75% or 3 cores.

Do not set the processor use to 0. Set it for 3 in your case (or higher). The 75% will limit it to 3, but if you set the max processor use to 0. It will probably limit to 0 ![]() |

anhhai, we're talking the "while processor usage is less then". The processors setting set to zero would only work for 6.2.28 or there abouts. 6.10 ignores that field and only responds to the processors %.
And yes, nonsensical as it may be to set website profile to zero processors, it would indeed cause 6.2.28 to not do anything.. but that option only exists on the website, not in any client from 6.4 AFAIR. nalchiks' problems is though the user activity stopping crunching. --//-- |
