Why Does it Take so Long to Validate?

This task has been awaiting validation for three days. That hasn't happened before with my other tasks. Is it normal, or is something wrong? Could it be because it is a "Computing for Clean Water" task?

Result Name Device Name Status Sent Time Time Due /
Return Time CPU Time (hours) Claimed/ Granted BOINC Credit

Re: Why Does it Take so Long to Validate?

When you click on the workunit name in the results section do you see the option to try validation?

If so click on it and the workunit should be validated in under half an hour.

There was an issue with the server that does the validation for that project causing delays.

Re: Why Does it Take so Long to Validate?

No, I don't see the option to try validation. I saw the notice when Clean Water was suspended, and it was sometime after 10/23, which is when I got that task. I returned it on 10/24. Possibly the server went down that day. Any other answers? Or is that WU just screwed/

Re: Why Does it Take so Long to Validate?

I'm pretty sure the issue Scribe referred to, is the cause.

Once they switch C4CW back on (I believe they mentioned that they were going to do it temporarily - just to "clean out the buffers"), then things will clear themselves.

YOU cannot validate the unit, it is validated by the same workunit being completed by other pc's and then being returned within the allowed time frame. Some pc's are not very good about meeting those time frames so a unit is resent to yet another pc, delaying the validation process longer and longer and longer. If you look in Boinc at the name of a workunit you will see a _0 if you are the first person to get that unit, a _1 if you are the 2nd person, a _2 if you are the 3rd person, etc, etc. The higher the number means either there is a high validation required, we have crunched some in the past that took 15 pc's to return it before it was validated, or the pc's are not returning a valid unit within the time frame allowed and it has been resent to other pc's to crunch. A general rule is if you have units that are past their deadline time, just abort them so they get sent back out to someone else sooner! Do NOT crunch them as you probably won't get any credit for them.

Re: Why Does it Take so Long to Validate?

This particular project doesn't send out for a wingman for validation unless the workunit data sent back is judged to be invalid, late, or inconclusive. Two of those are when the workunit is validated by the server.

The op was saying the workunit had not been validated even thought it typically only takes a few minutes upon reporting it completed.

Hmm. Does this mean that it's a replication-1 project or are you talking about a further replication after a problem with (validation, late) ?

An enterprising statistically-minded enthusiast might be tempted to produce a simple table to show projects' characteristics. Like start-date, number of replications/quorum, work-unit size (or dynamic in the case of - what was that project from long ago - er, er... HCMD2, IIRC) number of work units, number of batches, latest batch number encountered, %-current-completion, crunching-days-allowed, estimated completion date and so on.

That would be very useful for general information and invaluable when considering the possible reasons for stuck-in-PV and related discussions - acknowledging that not all such statistics may be known or be applicable to all projects...
