Question: are finished WUs pushed or pulled to the servers?
----------------------------------------Another question: If pulled, how often or under what conditions do the WUs get pulled? The reason I ask is that I have two computers crunching WUs right now. On one of them (older, slower model), it takes longer for finished results/WUs to get uploaded to the servers (sometimes it can sit there for over a day). Thanks, CJSLMAN |

Thanks, CJSLMAN PUSHED...if the units get too close to the deadline the finished units will be pushed by the software to make sure you get all the credits you can get. If you need new work, the normal occurence, the Boinc software will also push the completed units back to the Server as it sends you new units to crunch. You can always manually push the units to the Server by opening Boinc Manager and then going to the Projects tab and clicking on WCG and then clicking update. Most units have a week or more as a deadline so sitting for a day or so is imaterial in the grand sceme of things. There are MANY Boinc projects though and some have deadlines of as short as a few days, so the Boinc software will send those back more often. ![]() ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by mikey159b at Oct 26, 2011 1:46:54 PM] |

There are a number of criteria for when completed WU's get reported (i.e., those in a 'Ready to Report' (RtR) stage - the data itself, generally gets uploaded straight away).
----------------------------------------The three most common ones are; 1) When your computer is requesting more WU's (which is dependent upon your cache/the estimated amount of work remaining etc), it completes the reporting process for those that are in the RtR state, 2) If a WU has been in the RtR state for 24 hrs, it then completes the process off, or 3) If the WU is within 24 hrs of it's deadline, then it'll get reported straight away. As I say, there are several other criteria for when/how WU's get sent back - and these (mainly) depend on your network settings (i.e., if your connection to the internet is set to download/upload WU's at a certain time etc.). ![]() |

In a nutshell:
Pushed!, and no later than 24 hours after the result files have been uploaded (step 1), which is immediate if a internet connection functions. Sooner, if for instance new work is requested. If there was no connection for longer than 24 hours, then the reporting is near immediate upon reconnection to the internet. Pull would be in conflict with the security principles. The initiation of all connections is by your client. --//-- |

Gang.... thanks for the responses ! Now I understand how the reporting mechanism works (until I have another question)

Why does the system not report at the same time as it uploads the results? I've never understood that aspect.

AFAIK, sending the data back, just entails that - whilst reporting results, requires access to the database, thus more transactions are needed.

If there was no connection for longer than 24 hours, then the reporting is near immediate upon reconnection to the internet. Well, that might be intended to be so, but I can say that it doesn't seem to always work this way. I have often multiple WUs sitting at "Ready to report" while the same host has gotten new WUs. Not sure though if more than 24h have passed in any of those case, I usually manually [update] when I notices this, but that isn't always the case. Actually I just noticed that a WU had finished earlier on the very host I am typing this and I got new work only after the manual update. And my Internet is available 24/7/365, so it is for the majority of hosts I am running WCG on friend's machines, with the exceptions of a couple of laptops. So that simply can not be the possible issue here either... Ralf |

If a back-off timer is running or there is a ''connect every...'' setting, that could be the case. In your situation, re the other thread v.v. HFCC exclusive with limited supply that could happen more frequent. Whether it cannot be the issue here, we can speculate. Without long logs with extra flags that print out backoff times, work fetch scheduling etc etc, it's a guess. Just know the basic rules how most clients are supposed to work... much of it written up in Wikis and Start Here FAQ forum.

Not sure though if more than 24h have passed in any of those case, I usually manually [update] when I notices this, but that isn't always the case. I've never seen BOINC make a scheduler-request to a project and not at the same time reporting any "ready to report"-tasks for the same project... The most probable you're seeing is a task finishing, upload starting, work-request is triggered, upload finish and client shows "ready to report", you get the scheduler-reply with new work. Since work-request was sent before file was finished uploaded, it was not "ready to report" and can be sitting for upto 24 hours if no more work-requests is triggered before this. ![]() "I make so many mistakes.
