10/26/2011 8:48:15 AM | World Community Grid | work fetch resumed by user

Status for WCG is blank, unlike SETI which has the normal communication deferred

Looking at properties:
World Community grid
CPU work fetch priority is set to -1227566.72

SETI@Home
CPU work fetch priority is set to 0

I have no idea if this is on my end (never messed with that), or on the server end.

Which projects are you enabled for? Are you working on any workunits?

Re: No Longer requesting work

Do you still get the same problem after a reboot of the PC?

Re: No Longer requesting work

I have normal communications with WCG servers. So the problem is with your setup. Might be DNS issue, so I suggest you restart you router (off for 1min) and then restart your system.

Might also be a problem with that client version (6.12.34) and the use of Suspending and Resuming Network Activity:
10/24/2011 9:00:01 AM | | Suspending network activity - time of day
10/25/2011 7:00:00 AM | | Resuming network activity

I have all available projects enabled, had no running workunits when I posted this, that I why I started investigating and then posting here.

Do you still get the same problem after a reboot of the PC?

Yes, I have restarted, not change for that whole day.

This was the first time I had it have a problem in 2 months since having to enable a specific time to connect to the internet (work PC).

Apparently on that day, all the way till now the network at work has been "acting up" as the IT department is telling me. As of right now, I am able to pull work from the servers.

Ah the network you are using to connect to the internet is down. Bane of computer users everywhere. Glad you figured the problem was external and solved.

What would worry me is this sequence in the log..

10/26/2011 7:50:13 AM | | Resuming computation

10/26/2011 8:45:39 AM | World Community Grid | Scheduler request completed

Why is BOINC not requesting further tasks when it (apparently) has none?

I've seen the same myself on many occasions - 'though IIRC an UPDATE has triggered a fetch (vaguely, regardless of the Not..requesting tasks)

And there are 8 cores down here on one machine - that's more than I have available total crying

Re: No Longer requesting work

This:

World Community grid
CPU work fetch priority is set to -1227566.72

Is the reason no work is requested, no matter how often the update button is hit... WCG has a massive debt to other projects associated to that client. Do a WCG project reset and it will be zero'd ** or suspend all work fetches for other projects on that client, and debt will increase again, but work should be fetched, particularly if there are idle cores.

--//--

** For the advanced users, there's an <options> flag <zero_debts>1</zero_debts> that can be set one time to 1 in the cc_config.xml to zero all debts of all projects. Reread the config in the client advanced menu, then edit the value to 0, else each time the client reads the config (boot e.g.), debts will be reset. (A project reset via the interface will cause all science apps to be re-downloaded, no fun with CEP2!)

Thanks, I will do a reset after the 8 or so work is done, just in case.

Re: No Longer requesting work

If you consider that WCG is 8 projects, soon => 10 full active, and most all others are 1, than maybe you'd like to play the resource share / project weight value on the website device profiles. I got WCG set to 500 and others to 50, so at the end the 10 other projects get a total of half the time, when not suspended, and WCG gets the other half. Shares are computed as the fraction of the total, so total all projects weights 1000 with WCG having 500 means 50%.

Don't know what client version you run, but the debt system is varying and in the next client 7.0 is completely revamped and probably upsetting to some who'd like a quasi daily balance, rather than long term. Some others, including me, wont like it because a mix of applications on multi-core devices tends to be more efficient, when running heavy types such as CEP2. Albeit, that client is still in alpha testing, so maybe an ear is found ... after all, crunching efficiency is not an to be underestimated factor.
