Pop up window in Boinc's simple view informing the user that computation has been suspended ?

Hello.

Having installed BOINC again after a system crash, I found out, that after a new installation of BOINC, the preferences are set autmatically to:
"Calculation allowed only if processor usage is below 25 percent".

Having a quite old computer I found out, that with those preferences BOINC's work
is suspended quite often.

What really worries me, is that I might not have found out this if I did not switch BOINC's advanced view.

What do my fellow crunchers think?

Shoudn't there be warning in BOINC's simple view informing that work has been suspended?

Maybe a popup window with a checkbox "Do not show this information again", allowing the user to switch it off.

Have you checked your preferences in this point?

Maybe BOIC is suspended often and you don’t even know?

Greetings and all the best.

Martin,

Actually, no, for this is in contravention of the "set and forget" design. Long as the program determines that no user intervention is required it is to stay silent.

Whilst the BOINC coded default is 25% [taking account of the most sensitive gamers and streaming video watchers!], WCG clean profile is set to 50%. Many users are fine with 75% or just set the value to 0 to disable the function.

P.S. It's in the FAQ's btw.

Re: Pop up window in Boinc's simple view informing the user that computation has been suspended ?

Hello SekeRob ,

first of all thank you for your answer and - above all - thank you for your work as
a community advisor. It is helpful and I really appreciate it. I am sure, the other crunchers and contributors to the forum do so, too.

Thank you once again, keep going.

I understand, that a popup window is not possible.

The basic problem I am writing and thinking about, is the fact, that many users might have their work suspended because of the processor usage preferences (crunch only if processor usage is below 25 per cent) even if they are not sensitive gamers or streaming video watchers. So Worldcommunitygrid is probably loosing chrunching power due to these a u t o m a t i c (!!!!!) settings, loosing cruching power u n n e c e s s a r i l y.

The popup window is only one possible solution to this problem.

I chose it thinking that it is relatively simple to implement and there is not much programming work neccessary to implement such a popup window.

If this is not posible, here is a different solution to the problem:

Ask the user during the BOINCs setup, how the processor usage settings on his computer should be set, instead of setting them automatically. Let him activly decide, how BOINC should be configured.

Do you know, whether the prefereces were set to "use processor only if usage is below 25 per cent right at the start of BOINC or has this been introduced with al later
BOINC version?

Thanks again for your answer.
Martin

Hello Martin.Schnellinger,
The 25% is part of the default selected by the WCG staff. I would never use it myself, but apparently WCG is very devoted to 'Just install and forget'. I hope many members are interested in looking over settings when they first install and change it, but if not then it should not hurt them at all. It just cuts the amount of time they donate to WCG.
