Maybe WCG should get some air time on an F1 race or something The F1 Circuit of the Americas is being built near Austin, Texas and may have its first race in November, 2011. Austin is an IBM town so there could be something later.

Oh yeah, that would be oh so cool! |

The best advertisement is the current users. But you will have to babysit awhile to keep it going. Not many folks I know like to keep their computers on 24/7 much less a couple hours a day. Just keep spreading the word.

Just keep spreading the word. Just talk to everyone you know....most people don't want to be bothered. Some do and will join. Apathy is a very strong force unfortunately, but don't give up. Speaking of keeping the computer on for a few hours will there be an update to the Bionic client that lets users determine the amount of tasks and be able to determine the maximum amount of time for each task? So that if a workunit is above a certain number of hours to complete it isn't sent to them? I think this would stop a lot of aborted units and units not finished in time.

Hmm - now if IBM was to to get on to F1 and have the grid sponsored by er, the grid....
Doesn't hurt for a large company to show a sense of humour. Gives them an excuse to explain it, their association with WCG and show their humanitarian side as well. Never know what could happen... |

It would be nice to see a WCG project that you could just stop crunching work (abort) if needed and the returned work would be useful. There are too many long tasks IMO. I've stopped running HCC. Went to strip a computer down for parts and had to wait 5h for some tasks to finish. Decided to abort some even after several hours of running as they were going to take another 12h (Overclocked Q8400, DDR3, 2 drives). Anyway replacing with an i7-2600 (G3 board), so should make up the difference soon enough.Another consideration is the growing number of projects, including many useless ones, so crunchers are being spread a bit thin. |

Hence why it would be useful to have a preference that stated that if a task was to say a run time over ten hours based on a estimate of your pc specs it wouldn't be sent to you. This would cut down on the number of tasks that weren't completed in time and user aborted tasks. Would certainly save a work on wcg end in re-sending tasks. It's a win win for all around. Admittly it would take some programming to do. But I could see it as a very useful upgrade to the Boinc manager.
Not everyone has a beast of a rig. Mine the longest task from wcg was 12 hours. Longest tasks tend to be the clean energy ones or a task that generates several files upon completion to be sent back. Most are four hours and my comp can do eight tasks from boinc manager at the same time. My suggestion for an upgrade would have the hardest longest tasks be sent out preferably to those with heavy duty rigs leaving easy to complete tasks to those with minimum specs. Seeing a lot of easy to do tasks that can be done quickly might make them feel more inclined to have their comps work for wcg. |

d from Birmingham, Alabama. Good thoughts and contemplations but the coona$$es from further west have all of that on their list to develop. It's one reason of multiple, not exhaustively, why WCG uses such rules as:
----------------------------------------1. 10 days deadline to complete a task, so no beast of a rig is needed in most all instances... most anyone with a few hours to spare daily can participate. 2. Try to let the average run time not exceed 6-8 hours, so if the mean device does take 6-8 hours, the slow wont take 24. Thats 2.4 hours per day. The light and heavy assignments, actually small and big sizing is one of the many features that will be added in the future, even an option where you can set the profile to want to crunch the Heavy Dee stuff or the feather light, bantam weight so to speak. Largely, BOINC Manager is just a GUI front. The managing is really done by a daemon that hates being fiddled with and does what the WCG servers send in work. It's there where many future scheduling refinements will be implemented. Happy crunching. --//-- P.S., there's a lot of reading material in Help and Start Here, a Dashboard and also a Matrix to help crunchers decide what to participate in [light or heavy in different aspects] and or what to adjust in settings. Keeping a low cache, like 0.1 days, helps accomplishing what you want. This way you'll be crunching only one task per core at a time.
