Re: Help Conquer Cancer September 2011 Update

Randzo, the project scientists did indeed develop the application on Linux and Mac, but the launch platform will be decided by WCGrid staff. I would guess Windows, so as to cover the most devices. We'll see.

Oh so they developed the application in linux and MAC but later it will be ported to windows.
I guess it wasn't very explicit in the PDF.

Thanks

One more thing.
Are you aiming to use the GPU app at HCC1 or in HCC2?

Thanks

Re: Help Conquer Cancer September 2011 Update

Congratulations Christian (cubes) and all HCC researchers team.

It is a great new without doubt ! For many years the usage of GPU's is one of most asked features by many of WCG users.

So, I strongly suggest you and all team to consider seriously launch this new HCC phase 2, using GPU's, only when the version that will run mainly Windows platform (that will cover around 90%-95% of WCG users and daily work - it is a number extracted from posts in the forums, probably WCG tech team have distinct and more precise numbers to show) be ready to be implemented in the WCG.

I guess that will be a foot shot if HCC team start it new project phase, with GPU's, without provide a version to Windows adopters. There is at least one considerable lesson learned and example to mention about it in WCG: The huge bad experience with only Linux plataform in the launch of CEP2 project, which was in my humble opinion a bad experience at least, due the huge time delay of many months until provide windows users access to process the project tasks.

Why was a bad experience ? Because despite of / or beside of CEP2 project have specific requirements to be processed, a natural barrier without doubt, the project scientists delay so much time to put a version to windows users in place, and until today a significant number of users (for sure the most in Windows platform) don't process CEP2.

And, due the huge reach of windows users in the numbers/stats/work done in WCG, unfortunately until today is very clear that CEP2 is by far the last project in the preferences and statistics of all users among all projects (take a look at graphs and stats that circulating in the forums all days, to confirm the true behind it...). I think that CEP2 project won't became a stuff like HCC1 for example, never !

So sorry for all that don't have the same point of view of me, but I can't believe that it hapenned with CEP2 only due the special requirements or due a simple coincidence of factors.

So please, pay attention on the launch preparatives to contemplate Windows users since the beging of HCC2 with GPU, including the Beta tests... thinking

Good luck anyway ! good luck idea peace coffee

Fully agree with you, GIBA!
Especially where the biggest part of of the potential GPU-crunchers are gamers - (who else would need powerfull GPUs).
And pairs like "gamers & Linux" or "gamers & Mac" could be both nominated as anecdote of the month in Jean Pierre's thread. laughing

Well remembered and said krakatuk ! wink

Despite of HCC1 be a stuff today among all crunchers (the daily stats comprove that it is a constant favourite due the facility to be processed, small time invested in each task and absence of errors), HCC2 could sofer a strike if the Windows tribe be negligenced at launch moment.

CEP1 was a success and none of us expected the quick finish of that project, but was created strong expectations about CEP2 and when CEP2 started was a huge deception for many crunchers, and became an uncomfortable fact during many months until windows be supported.

Appear be an strategic error launch it (HCC2) in WCG, without Windows users support, specially gammers which invest considerable resources in powerfull machines with strong GPU's to play and fun. thinking coffee

Re: Help Conquer Cancer September 2011 Update

It's finally time for the WCG staff to end this Military Secrecy mentality that seems to pervade it and give a realistic estimate about when this will be implemented.

I plan on putting a system together in the next month or so and am willing to upgrade the video card with this in mind if this is planned for implementation in the near future.

Communication is part of a collaborative project and it's time to start improving it.

Re: Help Conquer Cancer September 2011 Update

Any performance numbers available on GPUs not listed in the paper?

Since the paper talk of loss of precision, did anyone look at the GPUs that support double precision?

Re: Help Conquer Cancer September 2011 Update

Hello WCGrid members,

The September 2011 update to the Help Conquer Cancer project has been posted. In this update, we announce work presented earlier this year at the High-Performance Computing Symposium in Montreal: the development of an OpenCL (GPU) implementation of HCC. This GPU version is currently running in our lab. We are pleased with its performance, and anticipate its eventual launch on the World Community Grid.

Please be patient in the meantime. It will take time. A large-scale launch on a new hardware platform is tricky business for the World Community Grid staff, especially while juggling every other active project and new projects emerging from the pipeline.

Thank you to everyone for your enthusiasm and interest in HCC, and your contribution of CPU cycles that make this and other projects possible.
