OK. I'm finally getting somewhere. I clicked on Advance, Preferences and changed the laptop to use no more than 50% of the processes. I'm now down to four tasks running. I'll play with a little more until I get it down to three.
----------------------------------------I still don't understand why the BOINC Manager won't shut down when I select exit, either on the task bar icon or from within the BOINC Manager. I always have to use Task Manager to shut down the processes before I can exit the application. C.B. [Edit 1 times, last edit by c.b.mullen at Sep 26, 2011 10:33:31 PM] |

I'm down to running two tasks on the laptop yet the processor temperature still averages 70C, and that's with the laptop sitting on a three fan chill mat. Is this too high for an Intel Core i7-2720QM processor 2.20 GHz with Turbo Boost 2.0 up to 3.30 GHz? If so, I'll reduce the number of tasks to one and see what happens.
----------------------------------------By the way, in my account, under Device Statistics, it shows only my desktop computer. Should it not also show the laptop? C.B. P.S.: I want to thank everyone who assisted me with my problems. I appreciate it very much. [Edit 2 times, last edit by c.b.mullen at Sep 26, 2011 11:44:44 PM] |

I always have to use Task Manager to shut down the processes before I can exit the application. C.B. To get the processes to shut down when you exit Boinc Manager go to Advanced->Options->General Tab Check the " Enable Manager exit dialog" box The next time you exit Boinc Manger there should be a pop-up dialog box asking if you want to stop the processes as well. This should happen every time you close BM unless you check the "Don't ask again box" (I think that's it) it which case it should be done automatically. Hope this helps... ![]() |

That's exactly what I needed to know. I disabled this popup dialogue on my desktop and the BOINC client still shuts down completely every time. I don't know why it's different on the laptop. Both computers are Dells and they both run Win 7 x64. Again, I want to thank you and all the others for the assistance provided. C.B. |

Hi,
One is likely installed at user level and the other as service [protected application execution aka PAE]. In old clients having installed as "user" would discontinue the core client [boinc.exe] when the BOINC Manager [boincmgr.exe] was exited. The newest AFAIU would still let the boinc.exe continue. Never tried it myself, but do know that the newer clients allow the BOINC Manager to start the service too, which is past was not possible. Ergo, if you like BOINC to continue even when the BM is exited, you need to uninstall and reinstall with the PAE option and "Allow all users", so you can still manage the client. See FAQ item 4 for a ''how to''. As for your temperature problem, you can set "use at most xx% CPU time" option (poorly implemented), or leave the CPU % time at 100 percent and use TThrottle [it's permanently active on my laptop]. This utility will automatically slow BOINC down whenever a temp ceiling is exceeded that you can enter for both the CPU and the GPU [if used for BOINC]. 70C is pretty good for a laptop while crunching... the CPU's can stand high temps, but the fans will be howling and then it truly gets too hot for use as a ''laptop''. 70C for just 2 of 8 possible cores on a 2710QM is rather high though. The machine should be able to operate at least 4 cores without HT or they should not have build it with that powerful CPU i.o.w. cooling is obstructed or insufficient. The tech experts familiar with this hardware would be able to tell. --//-- |
