I've been all over these forums attempting to determine how to add a new laptop to my member account. I'm certain the answers are there but I just can't determine how to do it or I'm simply too ignorant to understand it.
I travel to China quite frequently so I want to be able to continue running the client away from my wireless connection, if it's even possible to run the client from within China. Thank you in advance for your time and any assistance provided and please excuse my ignorance. C.B. |

Install Boinc on the laptop.
Add new project (WCG) Enter your login details (same as the forum). That's it. |

Install Boinc on the laptop. Add new project (WCG) Enter your login details (same as the forum). That's it. Thank you for your prompt reply, skgiven. I installed the BOINC agent on the laptop, signed in using my login username and password and now have the BOINC Manager displayed. In the project pane it shows my account and the work done but that's all it displays. I clicked on "Update" in the left pane and in the right pane, under Status it displayed Scheduler request pending and a few seconds later it displayed Communication deferred. I went to the WCG website and it shows the laptop, set to run under the same preferences as the desktop. Both computers are listed as Default; I don't know how this affects my attempt to run on the laptop the same projects as listed for the desktop. I'm stuck. I can't seem to get any projects listed in the BOINC Manager for my laptop. C.B. Update: Everything seems to be OK now but the laptop is running eight tasks instead of the three tasks running on my desktop. I was forced to shut down the client. I'm attempting to reduce the tasks running to three. My desktop computer has an AMD Phenom ll 1075T processor and the laptop has an Intel Core i7-2720QM processor 2.20 GHz with Turbo Boost 2.0 up to 3.30 GHz. Do different processors interpret the preferences differently? Again, I'm wondering about the Default setting for both computers, where they both show as Default. If I uncheck the Default box on the laptop will I still be able to run the same tasks as those running on the desktop? If I change the preferences on the laptop will the preferences on the desktop also change. If I can't determine how to reduce the tasks on the laptop from eight to three I'll be forced to remove the client from the laptop. If the Default profile says use 100% both will runn different amounts of WU's. You can put the laptop on a different profile and limit it's CPU usage to 50%(4) or less. ![]() ![]() |

I've been all over WCG's website and the forums trying to determine how to put the laptop on a different profile but as of yet have not been successful. Does it have something to do with both computers listed as Default? If I change the default setting for the laptop profile to something else and then reconfigure the preferences will I still receive the same tasks as listed for the desktop? Which profile would I select? Do I select Home, Work or School and then go from there? I've selected the laptop, which has the same custom profile as the desktop but when I make a change for the laptop the change is also enabled for the desktop. Again, is this because both are listed as Default? I apologize for all these questions. I don't mean to needlessly take up the time of all those willing to assist. Hello c.b.mullen,
----------------------------------------I suggest you put your desktop on Home. This will initially have the same preferences as Default. Put your laptop on Work. That will start out looking the same as Default. Laptops can not cool as well as desktops. Default uses all your cores, which you do not want your laptop to do. I suggest that your laptop should only run at 50% of the time. This will run 1 second on and 1 second off. It will only run BOINC while it is plugged in. I think you should only run 2 to 4 projects on a laptop, hence 25% to 50% on Work. My own choice would only be 2 projects unless I were very experienced and familiar with checking CPU temperatures. With only 2 projects, I would check the 'Leave Application in Memory' option, since otherwise I would probably lose a lot of time. Also, I would let it run BOINC unless 75% ( not 25%) of the CPU was running non-BOINC tasks. Home should run all 3 of your Phenom II Trio cores. Let it run 100% of the cores 100% of the time and set 'Leave Applications in Memory'. Again, let BOINC run unless 75% of the cores are running non-BOINC tasks. Remember to SAVE your changes to Home and Work. You need to set one of these as your default for new computers. I use my desktop profile Home as my default. Both these profiles need to be set to Custom Options at the beginning. It would be easier if you first set the desktop profile Home to 'Maximum Output' and then customized it. Please ask if this looks tricky. Lawrence Added: Just saw your recent post. Click on My Grid - Device Manager, then change Selected Profile to Home for your desktop and to Work for your laptop. My Grid - Device Manager - Device Profiles - Create A New BOINC Device Profile for Work and Create A New BOINC Device Profile for Home. Prior to receiving your post I changed the laptop profile to home and reconfigured the profile to use only 50% of processors yet it still ran eight tasks. I then changed the profile again to use only 25% yet it still runs eight tasks. Also, when I exit the BOINC agent the tasks continue to run. I have to go to Task Manager every time and stop the processes for BOINC and WCG manually. I don' t understand this. C.B. |

CB after you changed you profiles on the web did you save and udate the Task Manager?
----------------------------------------After you change profiles on the web Boinc won't find these until it logs onto the server. Projects tab highlite WCG click update bar or I like to Advanced Preferences Clear and Yes or okay ![]() ![]() |

OK. Here's the scoop. lawrencehardin, I did as you suggested and listed the desktop as home, keeping the same profile as my original default profile, using 75% of processors. It is now listed as the home profile. I then created a work profile, using 50% of processors and changed the laptop profile to work. It is now listed as having a work profile. The BOINC agent continued to run eight tasks. I then changed the laptop's work profile to 25% of processors and it continues to run eight tasks. I"m just about ready to uninstall WCG from my laptop and say to hell with it and just run it on the desktop. By the way, during all these profile changes and the running of the tasks the laptop has been running on AC power.

Projects tab highlite WCG click update bar or I like to Advanced Preferences Clear and Yes or okay ![]() PecosRiverM, after I made the profile changes I had to shut down the BOINC Manager using Task Manager because exiting the application did not shut it down. Nothing has changed, with the laptop still running eight tasks. I exited the BOINC Manager and then restarted the application each time I made changes to the laptop's profile. I did as you suggested and went to the Projects tab and clicked on Update and received the same response as always, which is Communication deferred. I don't know what else to do. It should not be this complicated. I've spent appx. six hours so far trying to overcome this problem. C.B. |
