shock Running WCG drops to 0 CPU use after a few minutes, resumes w/reboot, Win XP

Have an older AMD system running Windows XP Home.

The power supply quit, and I then had to reinstall XP, which reformatted the hard drive to get running again.

Installed from XP SP2 disk, then installed SP3 and about 100 patches from winupdate.

No Anti-Virus on this system yet.

Installed the current BOINC version, and attached to WCG.

It has run several days and is still on the first work unit.

The task runs for a few minutes, then the CPU time as shown on the Windows Task Manager drops to zero. System Idle in the task manager shows about 98 percent.

I tried install/remove on BOINC, and then installed the older 6.6.38...
same problem....

I tried changing the screen saver from BOINC to marquee... same problem...

Only rebooting seems to get CPU time again, but only for a few minutes.

Elapsed time on the Tasks tab counts up, but progress % is stuck.

Have tried several changes on the prefs processor usage... now have "While computer in use" checked, "Only after idle" at .1 min,
"Use at most" 100.00 "% of CPU Time.

Just tried, again, "CLEAR" on the prefs screen, to use defaults, but same problem.

Have been running today with Acitivity ---> Run Always, doesn't
seem to make a difference.

When I log onto WCG stats, this computer does not show up in device manager, but I do not think it has returned any tasks yet.

Running like this for several days and out of ideas...

Please help! sad

Re: Running WCG drops to 0 CPU use after a few minutes, resumes w/reboot, Win XP

I finally killed the Proteome Folding wu that was not running for several days...

Now running a Computing for Clean Water unit, and things seem OK. Task Manager shows 94-98 % of CPU going to WCG now. It's been running OK for 2 hours now.

Not sure why the Proteome unit was a problem... have 1 gig of RAM and a single 1.1 GHz CPU Athon.

Will run other Grid projects, unless someone has a solution for the problem with the Proteome unit.

Thanks.

Re: Running WCG drops to 0 CPU use after a few minutes, resumes w/reboot, Win XP

Hello Nebraska-Dude,
Sorry I am late answering. At least twice I have had to reboot to get a work unit to run. If I ever got one that did not run after a reboot, I would assume that something glitched when they made the work unit and I would abort it. Nothing is infallible and errors can occur at every stage of the process.

You did the right thing.
