One of the two AMD quad cores bit the dust.
----------------------------------------Can't get it to power up. It is a replacement for a Gateway P4 that failed. That's the third Gateway to fail, my notebook will not communicate with the network and I am tired of the problems. If it has to be replaced it won't be a Gateway (Acer, or eMachines). ![]() ![]() Please join the team The survivors ![]() |

The Gateway problem was a bad power supply.
----------------------------------------Glad they carry replacements locally. It's up and running. This is the third problem with this PC: 1. New out of the box tthe cable for the hard drive was not connected, it would not boot. 2. Plastic CPU bracket that holds the cooler broke, allowing the cooler and fan to fall to the bottom of the case, it would not boot. 3. The PSU failed, it would not boot. Very happy with the i7 build, would lean towards building another Intel before buying AMD. ![]() ![]() Please join the team The survivors ![]() |

I am happy with my "wife's" new computer that i can crunch on.. has defiantly brought me up on power since Christmas (being an i7)
----------------------------------------Yes Rcc is correct about badges being of no real value... but they are just like points and everything else its trying to quantify that you are making a difference @ grumpygrampy -- in the big scheme of things every computer helps according to boincstats for ALL PROJECTS you are rank 257,117 out of 2,347,901 and have completed more than 89% of all boinc users and rising rapidly through the ranks. as for WCG people (accoring to boincstats) Accumulated more credit than % of all World Community Grid users 87.18% with a rank of 48,050 yes you may not have the fastest computer but you are making a difference... think of it this way our of the whole worlds population you are rank 48,050 on WCG out of an estimated 6,996,803,798 population of the world. you should not worry about the Power crunchers... myself I have 4 computers running (one is an i7 the rest are old) you are doing what you can with what you have and what you can support... ------- looks like i was first on team to get there snail but it dose not matter we are trying to find cures for everything before us or someone we knows dies from it. ![]() |

Found this interesting Wiki about the WCG credit system:
----------------------------------------http://wcg.wikia.com/wiki/Credit_system It looks like I was wrong about points, they do have value and are an attempt to level the playing field. Run time and results are not suitable for comparison. Obviously, there are members that have gold, silver, ruby, etc... in SN2S just a few days after the project starts. There are members that put out more run time in one week than most put out in a year. It is discouraging to see on the forum that somebody has reached millions of results returned. What's wrong with me, why do I have 30,000, I joined WCG in 2007? Nothing! I am just an ordinary person that does not have a server farm in their basement. Just like there is someone out there bigger, badder, meaner there are people out there that are less fortunate. What is cause for celebration for you may be less joyful for someone with less resources. I think I will stop looking at numbers, my numbers, your numbers, everyone's numbers. Competition is cool, but I'm not here to win the race. ![]() ![]() Please join the team The survivors ![]() |

@nasher - thanks for the encouraging words. I have no problem with accumulating points/badges. Just don't want to have 'super crunchers' waiting on us slower folk for their validations.
@LM - My kids went to DISNEY WORLD several years ago, and brought me back a hat with GRUMPY on it. (They must have been out of Sneezy, Sleepy, Dopey, Doc, Happy and Bashful at the time). I wear it everywhere. crunching...crunching... ![]() |

Don't be down on AMD just because the Gateway computer was poorly built. I have built my own computers for most of my computing career, and have usually leaned toward AMD because they are so much less expensive. For the most part, they have been as reliable as any Intel CPU. I went with the Intel 2nd gen i7 this time because it gives me more crunching power, and I can now afford to pay a bit more. But I just built a computer for my neighbor using an AMD Sempron CPU and the entire computer including case cost $200. You really can't do that with an Intel CPU.
----------------------------------------EDIT: An interesting note: The computer I built for my neighbor replaced an old Gateway that had given up the ghost ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Feb 26, 2012 9:28:06 PM] |

gretchch,
----------------------------------------I am writing on the forum using an AMD HP PC, and it has been trouble free. Truth is, none of the problems on the other Gateway AMD had anything to do with the CPU/NB/SB chips. The broken CPU clip is part of the motherboard. Cost wise AMD has the lower price. But, it takes two quad cores to equal the number of tasks run by an Intel with hyper threading. The two AMD PCs I have cost a combined total of $1,300. The i7 recently built cost about that much. I don't know how much power the 2 AMDs use but the i7 uses about 162-168 watts when running WCG 100%. Most likely the cost of running 2 AMDs is higher than 1 i7. The PC I am now using puts out about 17-19 GFlops. The i7 puts out 55-67 GFlops. For crunching on WCG 2 AMDs do not equal 1 i7. That reasoning is what inspired me to make my comments about choosing Intel over AMD. Plus I get frustrated when something breaks. Didn't mean to bad mouth AMD. ![]() ![]() Please join the team The survivors ![]() |
