Hello!
I am having problems with running WCG since I bought a new computer and changed to Windows 7 64 bit some weeks ago. After running WCG in the background for some hours all my programs will crash (including WCG). For example Firefox, Pidgin IM and Winamp. There seems to be some problem with the memory management or something. I always have to restart my computer to get the programs working again. I reduced the harddisk use and lowered the processor load to 50 % in the WCG menu. But unfortunately this didn't help. If I turn off WCG completely everything works fine. So I'm guessing there might be a bug or some problem in combination with my Windows or hardware configuration etc. So at the moment I'm not running WCG at all, which makes me very sad :) Perhaps someone else has experienced the same problems? Thanks in advance! Chris |

Are you running the 64bit BOINC app? or the WCG version, Which is 32bit.
----------------------------------------I use the BOINC x64 app with no problems.

Hello Ultron ,
That looks good. If I found myself in that situation, I would start doing some experiments. First, I would double click on BOINC Manager, then select Advanced - Preferences. On the Preferences popup, I would select Clear in the upper right corner. This will clear the Local Preference file on my computer and tell BOINC to use the website preferences instead. This will prevent confusion. Secondly, I would start playing with the number of cores that BOINC uses on the 6-core CPU. ( I'm envious, I only have 4.) Using the browser to go to the WCG site, select My Grid then select Device Manager on the left side. Under 'Selected Profile' you will probably see Default. There are 3 other possible profiles, named Home, Work and School. Initially, they all have the same values inside them. My personal preference is to leave Default alone and use Home instead, making it my default profile. Then click on the profile to start changing it.1) Select Maximum Output in the first section, make sure that 'Set As Default' is checked at the bottom of the first section, then go to the bottom and select SAVE. Now you will have fewer limitations imposed on your system and your cores can run BOINC all the time. The initial default is to run cores for 3 seconds out of 5, in order to reduce heat buildup in laptops. I am assuming your hex-core CPU is in a desktop with good cooling. 2) Now that you have the Maximum Output values selected, select Custom Profile in the top section and make 3 additional changes. Of course, you will want to read over all the values that can be changed. Under the Processor Usage section, you will find 2 lines to set the number of cores used. To avoid confusion, always set both lines together, even though only one line will be used by the particular version of BOINC that you have. To use 2 cores, set these lines as follows: On multiprocessors, at most use: 2 processors On multiprocessors, use: 34% of processors Farther down, under the Memory Usage section, be sure that you have: Leave applications in memory while suspended? Yes This will save time by keeping your running projects in memory when they are preempted. You have 6 GB of RAM and umpty-ump GB of Virtual Memory, so this is not a problem. Instead it is a time-saver. By the way, whenever I am experimenting, I make sure that 'Workunit Cache Settings' is set to: Connect to network about every 0.1 days Cache 0.0 extra days of work This keeps me from downloading lots of extra work units that I might have to trash while I am experimenting. Be sure to hit SAVE at the bottom. This experiment might work, in which case you can experiment with more cores, using Task Manager to make sure that the WCG processes are running at near 100%. As long as they are, you are not taking time away from more important system processes. If it still crashes, then . . . sigh . . . we will have to check other possibilities.Lawrence |

Who is the maker of your computer? Seems there is a conflict going on or possibly sloppy thermal paste and it's heating up quick. Do you have a temperature program to see your processor temps? If not, get hardware monitor (free), http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html , to verify your not overheating. When you say you changed to win7 64, was that an upgrade from 32?

I happen to have a new computer here with the same chip, AMD Phenom II X6 1100T, 3.3Gb with 12 Gb of memory. that has been running fine 24/7 for the 3 months I have had it.
----------------------------------------This is an HP Pavilion HPE with 64 bit Windows 7. I just changed the default 4 cores to 6 cores and let fly. C4CW runs correctly in 64 bit and all others use 32 bit. I am using the regular BOINC version 6.12.10 and not the WCG BOINC version. I am running about 6 concurrent projects. I downloaded the freeware speedfan to check. Core temperature is running about 53 degrees C at 100% utilization, ranging between 52.5 and 53.5. 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | | Starting BOINC client version 6.12.10 for windows_x86_64 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | | log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | | Libraries: libcurl/7.19.7 OpenSSL/0.9.8l zlib/1.2.5 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | | Data directory: C:\BOINC\data 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | | Running under account retsof 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | | Processor: 6 AuthenticAMD AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1100T Processor [Family 16 Model 10 Stepping 0] 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | | Processor: 512.00 KB cache 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | | Processor features: fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 htt pni cx16 syscall nx lm svm sse4a osvw ibs skinit wdt page1gb rdtscp 3dnowext 3dnow 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | | OS: Microsoft Windows 7: Home Premium x64 Edition, Service Pack 1, (06.01.7601.00) 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | | Memory: 11.99 GB physical, 23.98 GB virtual 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | | Disk: 1.35 TB total, 1.30 TB free 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | | Local time is UTC -5 hours 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | | ATI GPU 0: AMD Radeon HD 6300 series (Caicos) (CAL version 1.4.838, 1024MB, 200 GFLOPS peak) 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | | A new version of BOINC is available. Download it. 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | World Community Grid | URL http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/; Computer ID 1622730; resource share 11 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | World Community Grid | General prefs: from World Community Grid (last modified 15-Aug-2011 16:22:16) 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | World Community Grid | Computer location: work 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | | General prefs: using separate prefs for work 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | | Reading preferences override file 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | | Preferences: 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | | max memory usage when active: 11051.91MB 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | | max memory usage when idle: 12279.89MB 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | | max disk usage: 100.00GB 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | | (to change preferences, visit the web site of an attached project, or select Preferences in the Manager) 8/27/2011 5:09:34 PM | | Not using a proxy 8/27/2011 5:09:52 PM | | Running CPU benchmarks 8/27/2011 5:09:52 PM | | Suspending computation - CPU benchmarks in progress 8/27/2011 5:10:24 PM | | Benchmark results: 8/27/2011 5:10:24 PM | | Number of CPUs: 6 8/27/2011 5:10:24 PM | | 3346 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU 8/27/2011 5:10:24 PM | | 8257 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU

Hi!
A little update on my error finding process. Thanks for all your suggestions so far. At first I tried to reproduce the WCG error messages in the case of a crash. But I couldn't. It seems the problem does not always affect WCG in the same way. Then I followed lawrencehardin's post and changed my settings via the website preferences. So now WCG runs on only 2 processor cores. This seemed to have a positive effect. It kept running for ca. 2 hours without any failure. CPU temperatur was at 51° C. Then I tried to turn up CPU heat a little, just to make sure. I installed Prime95, which increased CPU heat to 63° C. For another hour all went well. Then Prime95 found an error in one worker-process. So it seems as if a CPU-core might be flawed. And some minutes after that WCG finally crashed again :/ Now I think I will run Prime95 again next weekend (I'm not at home during the week unfortunately). They recommend 6-24h testing time. Chris |
