Hello,
I installed BOINC on another computer and I noticed I'm getting a lot of errors from Clean Energy Project WUs. Error message is always the same: Result Name: E202911_ 173_ C.27.C20H9N3S3Se.00733882.2.set1d06_ 1-- <core_client_version>6.10.58</core_client_version> <![CDATA[ <message> - exit code 195 (0xc3) </message> <stderr_txt> INFO: No state to restore. Start from the beginning. [15:00:26] Number of jobs = 16 [15:00:26] Starting job 0,CPU time has been restored to 0.000000. Application exited with RC = 0x502 [15:05:21] Finished Job #0 15:05:21 (4572): called boinc_finish </stderr_txt> ]]> Only result name changes because of different WU. I excluded boinc directory from being scanned by the antivirus (I use Microsoft Security Essentials) and I rebooted the pc but without effect. This machine has the following configuration: Microsoft XP SP3 with all updates and patches from MS. Antivirus Microsoft Security Essentials, no Firewall or anything else. Hardware: Pentium D CPU 2,66 GHz Dual core, 4 GB Ram (3 usable), 20GB free HD space. I looked in the forum and in the FAQ and found nothing that solves the issue. -195 is BOINC not recognizing the application, but I have other machines and Clean Energy WUs are processed correctly. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help |

If this is continuous, suggest to do a project reset, better than having uncertainty. Rules in the Security software maybe need deleting and then for you to stay on-screen so you can respond to any queries your MSE/FW software may throw.
----------------------------------------Mind you, have a pack of patches in the W7 Update queue, so I'll be treating this run with gloved hands... there's always 1 CEP2 running on this device. --//-- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Aug 10, 2011 1:42:07 PM] |

Ok, project reset done.
I newly excluded all BOINC related folders. I can't understand your last sentence....this is an XP machine so what W7 has to do with it? |

My last line means that updates may have broken... is XP-SP3 still maintained by MS? MSE will be I presume.
As for the error, long time ago read that if the exit code had a minus in front, it could be tagged to something BOINC/science app related and if not, something with the system [software/hardware] falling over. Did not find it again so not 100% on the exact explanation. FTM, just let it run and tell us when you see [non] improvement. --//-- |

XP SP3 is still mainained but not for long. MSE is a fairly new product so it must be. However I install MSE on all windows machines I use and never had problems. I too think it might be CPU, memory or some other hardware problem.
As for the error number, it has a minus in front. I checked forum FAQs before posting and it is listed here http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?viewCat=3 ERR_NO_APP_VERSION -195 BOINC couldn't find the application's version number. However, this problem happens only on this particular machine for the moment so it might be hw failing. I'll monitor it and report soon what happens (when it gets new CEP WUs). |

"- exit code 195 (0xc3)"
----------------------------------------Not seeing a minus sign in what you posted, directly in front of the 195 ;>) Looking closer, the job log indicates it ran for about 5 minutes... that'd be a very slow program to realize that the version info is absent. :D Anyway, concur... let us know in a while if good or bad things happen. --//-- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Aug 10, 2011 5:19:37 PM] |

I find on failed CEP2 wu's, it is typically the hard drive that has the most issues with failing or not being up to par. I would start there. Even good hard drives sometimes fail on CEP2. It was months before a laptop I had could run CEP2 without crashing. In my laptops situation, it was just not capable of handling the I/O's. I have no idea if it was something the techs changed or what. It has happened on a few machines of mine.
----------------------------------------Western Digital's Data Lifeguard is what I suggest for testing. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Coleslaw at Aug 10, 2011 10:19:15 PM] |

Ok, I'll do some tests on HD. Is there any way I can try to see whether it is my disk's fault? Aside from doing error tests, is there something in BOINC that I can see? maybe I can enable something in the BOINC agent configuration?
----------------------------------------Also, I watched this machine's stats and I already have valid results from faah and c4cw and also in the past it worked correctly on projects other than CEP2. [UPDATE] I had another look at results stats and all WUs for all projects except CEP2 are valid. All CEP2 WUs are in error. However, after the project reset I did as suggested by Sekerob, I got a new CEP2 WU so I'll wait and see whether this one goes in error too. Like I mentioned before...my laptop would sometimes work, but most just failed and would even crash my system most of the time. All other projects worked perfectly fine. Just CEP2 had troubles. The hard drive tested fine, but it ended up just being too much strain on it. Cheap Hitachi's seem to be a repeat tech nightmare for me. I have also found if there are bad sectors on the drive that it will easily kill the work unit. If you have leftover parts, you may try even swapping your hard drive or possibly just use a Live Linux CD like Ubuntu and see if CEP2 fails when running off the CD. Obviously the method would crunch slower, but would let you run wu's on the system without interference from the hard drive.
