Laptop power

Hi,

I currently run the software on both my desktop and laptop. However the software will not operate on the laptop whilst its running on the battery, providing a user option to allow this will allow individuals to make a choice over this. Personally I like to 'cycle', through charging & depletion, the battery in order to maximise its over all life.

Re: Laptop power

Peter,
I also run the agent on my laptop, which I use only when I am out in the field or doing presentations. You may have the following information, but I will repost it anyway because it is useful to know. It was posted by RT (Community Admin) in April this year:

My Toshiba Satelllite is new and has a menu item called "Toshiba Console" In the "Console" window, there is a "Power Managment" window. In there you can control all kinds of things including CPU "Speed". Your choices are 1,2,3 or 4. I generally leave it on 2 (which takes the 3.2Ghz P4 down quite a bit...I have not tested) and cools it down to the point that the fan just idles. In a cold room (65-70 F) I can run it at "3" with the fan running slow. That is all about I know about it as I have never messed with it much. I just use it when I am on the road.

I too wondered if I would like to run the agent when on battery, however I came to the conclusion that I don't as would constantly have to monitor the agent when I am in the field with no access to mains power. . . . then one day I would be preoccupied and ... baterry goes dead on me and I have a report to write on the train .... so I came to the conclusion that I like the setup. I too recycle my battery. I gives me the feeling of pushing the battery usage and life to its limit smile

Re: Laptop power

Peter,

If you have a wireless card, turning that on (whether there's a wireless network or not) will help deplete your batter faster.

The issue of on vs. off on a laptop not plugged in has been discussed at some length on the forum (a search on "laptop battery" returns 276 results). Here and here we actually had people asking for the agent to pause when the laptop is running on its battery, even when it already did.

Here you can find a post by Alther with a tool that will allow you to run the agent while your laptop is running on its battery. It apparently worked for ka2qhd ...

Yet another thread mentions the possibility that members who didn't know better would use the agent and run down their battery without realizing (and then they'd come here and post exactly the opposite of what you've posted and they'd probably be much more upset about it, as I'm sure you can imagine). This is, of course, the reason we've left that option out of the agent. Basically to save people from themselves. If you want to download the UD Tweaker mentioned in Alther's post, it becomes an opt-in option rather than an opt-out, which we concluded to be a much safer way to do it. Of course, you use the UD Tweaker at your own discretion, and we cannot be held liable if your battery dies at an inopportune time, or if you hurt the overall life of your battery.
