Re: Building a fast computer for WCG

Oh, just found out that AMD Bulldozer won't have GPU inside.... :o(( And a proper integrated GPU was only the reason for me to wait for this crap. So sad... :(

Ok, I think I have to take 2600K. Now there is no better or more efficient option for crunchers. Waiting half a year for SB-E makes no sense...

Unless you want to wait for the 6 & 8 core Ivy Bridge CPUs to become available. How much they will cost is anyone's guess. confused

Re: Building a fast computer for WCG

I've done extensive testing with ram and there is no measurable difference with ram speeds above 1333 MHz.

Is these "extensive testing" done only with WCG, or have you also done any benchmarking with more memory-demanding BOINC-projects like CPDN?

Only with WCG. I'll update my previous post to add that.
The sweet spot for SB system RAM is 1600MHz.
This is not the case for other systems, and will not be in the future.
Presently SB is dual channel only. This is also the case for AMD systems, but not the case for i7-900 systems (triple channel). Future SB systems will be triple and quad channel, so they will gain the present loss from dual channel and then some.
Unfortunately the present uncompetitive CPU non-market means that Intel is holding back on designs, and in a response to AMD's latest delays Intel has no choice but to pull back from it's next release (something that could have already happened, had they not gobbled up so many competitors; when you get too big you get split up). So Intel can now only wait to be eaten alive by the big2 GPU manufacturers.
