I live in an Old City in the North west Of England Dating back pre Roman Within the city boundaries are streets, roads & areas that have interesting historical names due to persons or happenings occurring nearby. I am sure that you all have similar locations so lets hear about them. It might spark such an interest that we might want to come and visit your town or at least have some knowledge as we pass by . I'll start you off With "Powder house Lane" In this lane there was a sturdy building "The Powder House" in which Gunpowder was stored. ![]() Ships coming into the port of Lancaster were obliged to relinquish their gunpowder to prevent them attacking the city. I'm guessing that at some point the barrels were returned . ---------------------------------------- [Edit 6 times, last edit by densnaps at Aug 14, 2011 4:48:30 PM] |

The main road through the 'Village' is Orford Road because the first resident bought all the land around here, build a white mansion and called it Orford House because that is where he hailed from.

The road that goes out to our county waste management facility is named "Throwita Way". I just had to look that location up. I see the cross street is "Truck Street" and another interesting road nearby is "Mother Lode Drive" and "Chuckwagon Way." Probably a lot more interesting names there too if one wanted to look further. Cheers

Pick anything to do with Gold, Mining, Booze or Women and it is probably in a town name. Whiskey is a big favorite. Placerville (county seat) was originally named Hangtown for obvious reasons. City fathers later decided that this name did not benefit the tourist trade. There's "Rough & Ready", "Gold Bug" and "Poker Flats" and in the summer you can go to "Cool". Cheers SJ! ![]() ![]() |

Fredericksburg, Texas welcomes all visitors — just look at the street signs for proof. Starting at the Adams Street intersection, head east on Main Street and take the first letter of every intersecting street name: they spell "All Welcome." Drive west on Main Street starting after the Adams Street intersection, and the first letter of the intersecting streets spell "Come Back."

Thats real clever restof, smacks of town planners "thinking"
----------------------------------------looking at the street names they are all interesting a mixture of history and nature . Most of our street names round here seem to have just happened I live on "Watery Lane" and water does run off from the fields behind in the rainy season, so well named. As is the road that the Prison farm is situated "Grab Lane" a warning for those inmates that might think of hopping over the fence ......... ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by densnaps at Jul 2, 2011 6:56:48 AM] |

Interesting. There's a town on the coast along the ''Adriatica, SS16". The main drag has side streets pointing to the beach and walking north to south (though it's really NW to SE), they've got town names in the order of towns situated along the Adriatic coast, so when you're at via Venezia and you have to be in via Bari, and after a click and a half have crossed Via Rimini, Catollica, Pesaro, Ancona, Ortona, Termoli, you know you've probably got another half click to walk before reaching your target. Now, that scheme builds confidence you're getting there, but suddenly you're back at Via Ravenna.
----------------------------------------Yes, that's how we do things. :D --//-- edit: PS, if you Google Earth to Bari, near the harbor, you see a street structure, which most of the US towns have adopted too... blocks. Not as old, but Bari has historical record going back some 3,500 years. [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Jul 2, 2011 7:35:46 AM] |

Not as old, but Bari has historical record going back some 3,500 years. A sensible way to build a town quite an extensive layout. Much smaller in scale is an embryo dating from the 1100's AD Winchelsea, East Sussex, England .Google it to see the same pattern on a much smaller scale .......... ![]() The town is built on a hill and used to be walled with four Gates three of these remain quite small and narrow for modern traffic. Local people claim's that it was the layout model for building New York look a little doubtful against Bari ....I did say it was an embryo though ![]() ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by densnaps at Jul 3, 2011 7:28:54 AM] |

Golgotha circa 1905
----------------------------------------![]() Golgotha July 11th 2011 ![]() This is an area of Lancaster where executions took place a high point on the way out of Lancaster the Pendle witches met their end here. In the 1600's it was open moorland the condemned persons were transported in an open tumbrel seated on their coffins from their dungeon home in Lancaster Castle. ![]() The witches nine of the ten were hanged here In later times post 1800 Hanging took place at the castle at first public but latterly due to act of Parliament in private ![]() The Castle ceased being a place of public execution in 1860. On November 15th1910 Thomas Rawcliffe was the last person hanged in Lancaster,The Castle remaining a prison until this March of this year and was the oldest Working prison in England ![]() this is the golden lion pub on which the above notices are displayed you can see them on the front by the door The pub is on Moor Lane obviously because it leads up to the moors and Gallows hill/Golgotha.The side street is Brewery Lane because the towns Brewery is situated there ---------------------------------------- [Edit 2 times, last edit by densnaps at Jul 11, 2011 9:17:43 PM] |
