Thanks Densnaps.

“If you sit by the river long enough, you can see the body of your enemy float by.”

But the story does not end in 1905 but continues today with somewhat of a “silver lining” (or in this case “gold” lining). Between circa 1905 and the early 1960’s much litigation occurred which established the tribal lands, or Sovereign Nations, which dot California. Some of these are measured in square miles while others are just a few acres.
California Tribal Lands
One of the defining moments that changed public opinion was the Occupation of Alcatraz in 1969. It was not that before these events Californians were anti-Indian but more like they never thought about it at all. Public sentiment quickly became predominately pro-Indian.
Since 1969, some of the more wealthy California tribes, as Sovereign Nations, (as with many tribes across the USA) began to open gambling casinos on tribal lands. This is a gross over simplification but the State of California said, “You can’t do that.” The tribes said, “Yes we can” and effectively gave them the “one finger salute” and continued. Litigation exploded and to-date billions have been spend but this time the Indians won (more or less) in court. Today Indian Gaming Casinos dot all of California.
I find it more than a bit ironic that today millions of Californians and tourists flock to Indian Gaming Casinos and eagerly, willingly and hopefully push their “gold” across the green felt of the blackjack tables or down the bottomless gullet of the slot machines. Just who are the new “Gold Miners” in California now? wink

peace

Re: Interesting Local Street & Place Names

Murderer's Bar, CA (Extinct Mining Town Near Coloma, CA 1849-1860)

"Killing, more killing and still more killing."

What follows are two accounts of two of the three parties (Californians, Oregonians & Indians) involved in The Incident at Murderer'€™s Bar

Notes: The story, as so many from my area, is probably a mixture of fact and folklore. However much of it is very well documented from eye-witness accounts (see bottom of article).

In this context a '€"Bar" is a peninsula formed by a rapid change in direction of the river. In the three forks of the American River there are many such Bars and each has its own unique name as they were prime locations for mining camps.

Coloma is the site of Sutter'€™s Mill (AKA: The Marshall Gold Discovery Site) where the California Gold Rush began.

Now
I would say that Coloma is in walking distance from me if I were not too old for a 10 mile trek up and down very steep hills. wink

Re: Interesting Local Street & Place Names

I have just added a new picture taken yesterday into the Golgotha Post 106 years between the two photos but not much change. The road layout is slightly altered the over head power lines gone and the Cottages didn't have TV antenna on the Chimblys

Walking in the road was not a problem back then. Yesterday cars wizzing past every few minuets meant I took my life in my hands to try to get the same view point .

Local history folk lore says that in the mid 1800's these cottages were occupied by ladies of easy virtue wink

This is taken looking the other way back towards the orginal photographers position The stone built cottage can be seen on the other photos behind the furthest car parked on the road.
In the early Photograph there are Cottages on the left hand side of the road
Long gone ....

Re: Interesting Local Street & Place Names

From Lancaster CA

The shuttle's were built in Palmdale CA and transported by road hence the Challenger Way title, to Edwards AFB where they tacked them onto a 747 and flew them to the launch site.
The facility in Palmdale where they were built was quite large and was used as a Wet set in the making of the Film HARD RAIN With Morgan Freeman..
