Hi,
I'm going to set up a new PC. How can I move the current tasks to the new PC, so that they can continue their progress? I'm running Boinc v6.10.58 on Win7 64-bit, should I upgrade the client to the newest version on the current PC first? Thanks! |

Nordeide,
I'm sure there is a way to do what you suggest and someone will enlighten us here, but the far easier solution would be to just let the "WU's finish crunching. In Boinc Manager Advanced View click on Projects, No New Tasks. This will run your cache dry and there you are. The general consensus is to use the v6.10.58 that you download from WGC for the fewest problems. Good luck. |

Hello Nordeide,
deltavee is right. BOINC has some built-in checks that take a lot of work to bypass. No New Tasks is what I would use, or just power down without spending any time or attention (mind-share) to this. We appreciate all your contributions. Don't let BOINC become a burden. We want you to feel good about your generosity. Lawrence |

Hi, I'm going to set up a new PC. How can I move the current tasks to the new PC, so that they can continue their progress? I'm running Boinc v6.10.58 on Win7 64-bit, should I upgrade the client to the newest version on the current PC first? Thanks! Atleast some of the WCG-projects uses Homogeneous Redundancy (HR for short), and this means different combinations of cpu-type and OS is put in their own groups, and a task crunched by a cpu/OS in the "wrong" group often can't validate due to result is different depending on HR-group. So, the easiest and safest then it comes to WCG is to just set "No new work", possibly abort any unstarted, finish current work, and remember to Report it, and just start with a completely new BOINC-installation on the new computer. But of course, if you're also running other BOINC-projects, and especially if you've got example a 1-month long CPDN-task at 50% or something, waiting until this is finished is often not an option, so if this is the case I would do this: 1: In BOINC, disable network. 2: Verify the location of BOINC data-directory (if not sure of location, this is shown then you starts BOINC). 3: Shut-down BOINC, making sure it's really stopped. 4: Copy data-directory including all it's sub-directories from old computer to new computer. 5: Install BOINC, making sure you select the location of data-directory to there it really is placed. 6: Start BOINC, and verify everything is working as it should before enabling network again. The reason to copy data-directory before installing BOINC is to make sure access-rights is set correctly on the data-directory. Oh, and just to make it general (in case others also wants to upgrade their computers), old and new computer must have same OS-type, meaning Mac/Intel to Mac/Intel, or Linux to Linux, or Windows to Windows is possible, while example Windows to Linux won't work. Except for possible HR-problems, there's no problems to example switch from XP-32bit to Win7-64bit, but downgrading from 64-bit to 32-bit can lead to problems... ![]() "I make so many mistakes. Something happened today with my Sandy.
----------------------------------------Boinc wasn't working, I tried to reboot but Win 7 seems to hang. I'm thinking on reinstalling Win7 (I'd like to save my Boinc and Wu's). How would I do this? Copy boinc dir's reinstall Win7 (and updates) reload boinc dir's reinstall boinc Is this about right? ![]() ![]() |

Yes, as long as it's the BOINC data-directory including sub-directories you're copying. ![]() "I make so many mistakes. But then just think of all the mistakes I don't make, although I might." |
