@RT 100% agree. Norton is beyond awful IMHO. Please don't get me started. <snip> See above for Norton comments. I'm not a fan of Comodo either. Do some searching about their certificate fiasco. I use Microsoft Security Essentials on all my machines and like it very muchNorton is a sad story. It used to be one of the better AV products. Now it's invasive and uses too much processor time and memory. To top it off, they keep making it more difficult to control what it does. The one good thing is the Norton removal tool available on their web site does a very good job or removing it. Comodo's products have been very hit or miss.... and then there's the certificate fiasco that Nanoprobe mentioned. Need I say it ... if Windows had been properly designed, there would be very little need for AV software (would still need firewalls). - D |

I am sorry to hear such bad news about Norton. I will not remove it until the time period for which I purchased it has expired. I did do a search on antivirus with Google and found the following information on two packages. I did not want tp spend too much time looking for anti virus software and I remember Intel bought an anti virus company -- was this to include the anti virus functions in its processors?
----------------------------------------Norton Internet Security - In a detailed comparative test at AV-Comparatives.org, Norton Internet Security 2011 earns the highest Advanced+ certification ... Avast AntiVirus 5 - Avast Free AntiVirus 5 is evaluated in many of AV-Comparatives' latest antivirus tests. Although the summary report and ... In that same Google search I ran across other antivirus reviews. One that I want to spend some time looking at has a URL of http://www.antivirusreviews.com/ and it claims to be unbiased, a review you can trust. But who knows what will be available when my current subscription ends? As for performance, the HCC work units all run in the 1.2 to 1.4 hour range without any attempt to overclock. Good Morning MOT dkt: OK. I lied. I hate Norton. I have, over the years, fought it to get it off computers..It used to be harder to get off a computer than most viruses. I have even stated here that "It is the only virus I know that you have to purchase". Anyway, I use Microsoft Security Essentials exclusively on all the computers that I own and maintain. I try to get people who's computers I work on to use it as well, mostly they agree. Note that this is somewhat self defeating in that the ones that use it don't get viruses and so I don't get to fix them. Generally even when people have time left on their subscription, I switch it out...no logic in continuing with substandard/consumptive/invasive software when the cost is the same either way. The only downside I can think of is that I do not know how much longer they will support it on XP. Nanoprobe. How could we go about that really? I would love to get these puppies (2 2600Ks) to crank out 8 HCC Work Units per hour, without overheating the processors. You can start an email conversation by going to www.windmillweb.com and using the contactus that way we can exchange email addresses. Gerald. I know nothing about the other packages that work on Ubuntu. This is an arena where I figure "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" Everyone have a GREAT day. And Thank You for doing this good work. Seriously, Thank You . |

We've had quite a run of milestones for a bit now. Looks like dubhain has a pretty good lock on becoming our next MOT Millionaire, unless something comes out of left field. Blueprint (Marc), that was a big one for you yesterday (hitting 10 million). Extra congrats from me! Those milestones with a 1 and several 0's are extra nice.
---------------------------------------- Looks like we're seeing some impact from the extended heat here in most of the US. RT has talked about how he's having to shut down many of his machines during the day. I bet his PV is smaller the usual now too. What may be some good news for him and our fellow crunchers in Texas is the expected landfall of TS Don tomorrow around Corpus Christi with a path up the Rio Grand valley area. Judson should see a good bit of rain. Even parmesian will see some rain there outside of Houston and the cooler temps are supposed to make it into Oklahoma well north of RT and YellowAV there in the DFW area. EDIT: Interesting, I read about the expected cooler temps over on CNN. Looking at Weather.com, they must either not be accounting for Don in their forcast models or are using different ones. They have DFW actually getting hotter tomorrow and over the weekend. Will just have to see what really happens. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by keithhenry at Jul 29, 2011 3:59:43 AM] |
