The outset is not worth anyone's time. Can concoct any argument with numbers, good for the gullible and the easily excitable to fall for them.. Sorta like MMGW. ![]() ![]() ![]() If you shut out 95% of the "relevant" data one could certainly see what you can... not all can see in the 12th hour too... it takes time ;>) |

Although the article is not particularly scientific, it captures the point which I think is right: Running distributed computing consumes a lot of money in terms of power and - maybe - computer components. That money would probably do more if directly given to the right researchers.
----------------------------------------Simple fact. But WCG also is fun :-) Regards, Martin ![]() |

This article has made me see the light... It's all so obvious now.
Technology is the devil and not used in "real scientific research." If we'd all just melt our computers into slag we wouldn't have to be embarrassed for ever pulling ourselves out of the primordial muck. Well If I'm going to melt this thing into slag, I'd better increase my CPU load, 'cause I'll never get there at this rate. |

What ever happened to the idea that a normal computer running with some power management consumes about the power of a 100-150watt light bulb?

If you shut out 95% of the "relevant" data one could certainly see what you can Works both ways. What ever happened to the idea that a normal computer running with some power management consumes about the power of a 100-150watt light bulb? Why be normal? ![]()
In 1969 I took an oath to defend and protect the U S Constitution against all enemies, both foreign and Domestic. There was no expiration date.

Forget about this insanity about computers destroying our planet when we have millions upon millions of gasoline and desile engines destroying this entire Planet and causing CANCER and no one seems to care.
Where is the analytical reasoning? Where did it go? These gasoline burning engines are NOT trying to find cures for Cancer as the WCG is. Instead, gasoline and desile engines CAUSE CANCER. Again, where is the analytical reasoning? Where did it go? How long does it take CHP Officers in California to develop CANCER? Not very long at all. Up and down the highways breathing exaust fumes from gasoline burning engines. Something no one wants to talk about. Well, you all have a good day. Oh, I'm planning to buy one more computer and dedicate it for use on the World Community Grid. I finally have found a very useful purpose for my energy use that may benifit many of us, world wide. I'm glad that I.B.M. created the World Community Grid. Yes, I.B.M. is putting energy to GOOD USE and so am I with my computers. |

You had me here:
...and instead donate that same amount of money "to the Rain Forest." I'm not sure how I'd send money to the rain forest. I've never sent a letter outside the U.S... Also: Did you know that it would take 3650 pounds of coal to power a Playstation 3 for a year? I sure didn't. I never should have gotten rid of my wood-burning Dreamcast. Just another way the Dreamcast was far ahead of its time. |
