While 'tuning' my boinc profile for my faster machine I noticed the "use no more than xx% of the pagefile" setting - why even use the pagefile at all? it is always (except when on a ssd) much slower than running in RAM... by changing the pagefile setting to 0 will that force all BOINC operation to run exclusively in RAM??? thanks

Yes, you could specify Zero with sufficient RAM to deal with all possible work combo conditions. Done it for long on W7, in fact in the OS disabled the SF, and had no issue, but would not dare doing that on 3.3GB accessible RAM and 4 concurrent CEP2.
On the other hand with BOINC as observed with Lucid and onwards, no Hardy observations, Linux is so good at utilizing RAM, that VM is rarely used with 3.3GB accessible. Sometimes it logs 40-80MB, but then it seems something non-BOINC was pushed off onto the HD. This is with a "swappiness" setting of 10 where default is 60. --//-- |

thanks, my system can easily handle the load - am running w2k8r2sp1 with 6gb ram on a intel coreI7 - the drive the files are located on has about 500gb available for use. I just joined back on Jan 29th and have already logged in about 2 years 90 days time so my system must be working right, maybe I'll even catch up to you timewaise...lol
thanks, kev |

i would avoid disabling the pagefile in windows completely just in case it goes off on one and i don't think wcg uses it anyways as my pagefiles been stuck on 16 and has only gone up after starting civ5 so i doubt there would be any performance increase in doing so

The Operative word is "Done". Windows in the end had issues, when it got very busy, things could freeze for longer, then causing BOINC to have these 30 second heartbeat
Stuck on 16... What? Hope it's not 16GB [16MB improbable for Windows] as that would depending on RAM size be serious overkill. 1.5 times RAM seems to be the running advice for that OS (could even be mentioned when working the VM settings). Linux created a volume that is exactly 1.0 times the usable RAM. Now here's a funny. Last few days had 45 patches send by MS to me W7 Laptop. First 40 late last week, then Tuesday, the monthly patch day, 5 more. Then CEP2s, 1 of 2 cores allowed, is completing at ~97.5% during the no-user input night sessions. Wonder what they did? --//-- |

Windows pagefile is set at 9gb +/- but 'technically' one could eliminate the pagefile IF the system RAM is max'd out, and only a few applications are running. But I agree, should have a pagefile

its 16mb min 12gb max seems to reduce windows usage of the pagefile and one really good reason for keeping the pagefile is due to windows broken filesystem cache that can suck up all available ram (can be seen in action if you use utorrent and uncheck disable read write filesystem cache and leaving it running overnight all available ram will be reduced or disappear completely)

Well this was brought up in another forum I belong to. The important thing to keep in mind isn't as much as Windows or BOINC running smooth, but other programs. Some will require a page file even if it isn't used. This happens with some games...especially some older ones. Some of the other forum members just put the page file in RamDrives as a work around.
