z2000, That sounds like Lawyer speak!
"We’re pleased to announce a new academic research grant program: Google Exacycle for Visiting Faculty. Through this program, we’ll award up to 10 qualified researchers with at least 100 million core-hours each, for a total of 1 billion core-hours. The program is focused on large-scale, CPU-bound batch computations in research areas such as biomedicine, energy, finance, entertainment, and agriculture, amongst others. For example, projects developing large-scale genomic search and alignment, massively scaled Monte Carlo simulations, and sky survey image analysis could be an ideal fit". Lets hope they lean a bit heavier on the BioMed, Energy and Agro than Finance and Entertainment. |

For WCG, only the HCC project applies as it is the only written in C++.Too bad... I'm surprised. I don't know that it's teh only actual project which could apply. Maybe wcg team have more C++ new projects in the pipeline to submit beside researchers and try capture something from Google. |

I imagine WCG and/or the Research Projects will be able to benefit from the announcement by Google that they will be donating a billion core hours to research. See the Official Research Blog and the Google Research Site ![]() |

Hmmm - how does this compare to what we all are contributing to research through World Community Grid right now: Average of 353 years/day = 3,092,280 hours/day 365 days/year * 3,092,280 hours/day = 1,128,682,200 1.1 Billion Core Hours/year!!!!!!!! Its good to see more people get involved. So, it means that Google effort is around 12,8 % less than WCG community could provide to researchers. Anyway, if WCG structure could capture something from Google efforts, will be a good improvement here !
Cheers ! GIB@

I dont know if we need any improvement from Google--they tend to take over or control projects--ediit--i really don't trust their motives [Edit 1 times, last edit by GeraldRube at Apr 23, 2011 9:33:38 AM] |

For sure, you probably are right. It appear not have the same characteristics that we can see in WCG.
----------------------------------------Take a look at this part of Google announcement: "Preference will be given to projects that are fairly high-risk/high-reward with the potential to drastically transform the scientific landscape. Even projects that yield negative results can still provide public data that the community can continue to analyze. At completion of the project, we recommend, but do not require, that all the researcher's data be made freely available to the academic community."
Cheers ! GIB@

So yeah I did the math,
----------------------------------------I have contributed about 227,000 core hours of crunching, 1 billion divided by this is 4000+ times what I've done... I'm thinking google is worth a bit more than 4000 times my net worth, but hey at least they are gonna do something! ![]() |

How much is one billion core hours?
Yesterday, WCG completed 329 years of cpu time, which works out to about 3 million hours. So at the current rate, WCG members would donate 1 billion hours in approximately one year. |

I see this as more of an alternative to WCG than a sponsor of WCG, but only WCG could say. I don't see why a company as big as IBM would need or want help from a bloated search engine, other than with the thread search facility
