Yes the map is wrong, I do not live in Brownsville but further west and north in Laredo. All this editing is ruining my reputation!. (twice to get it right!) What?!? I can't believe I made a mistake. It's not even May and I've already gone over my mistake quota for the year. And that year would be 2123. I can't apologize enough to the good doctor for putting him in Brownsville rather than Laredo. I've been to both enough times to know the difference. either way, he's over 300 miles southwest from Houston. corrected map ![]() In my defense there is only 200 miles between Laredo and Brownsville. Just a nice morning drive in Texas. In Memory of Dave Bell |

This talk about Brownsville and Laredo lead me to the Google map as my wife's grandparents grew up in Brownsville, but that was in in Oregon. I visited that town with my wife and our boys. I was having a hard time finding it on the map above, but with Google, I found it is almost on the Rio Grande about 20 miles from the gulf. Laredo is also on the Rio Grande but much further inland.

Judson, I'm one of those folks that hates taking pills of any kind. That's a good thing in some ways like when you have a fever. That's a normal defense mechinism of the body so I don't take anything for one unless it hits the 102-103 range. There's too much emphasis on "is something bothering you? pop a pill". I'm also not wild about the "one size fits all" approach that seems to dominate in medicine. People are different and so are their bodies. It's sad to read about things like how so few meds have been tested adequately in women. Most of the trials/tests apparently are predominately men. Guess that's why things like the problem with the "psycho" drugs increasing the suicide rates in kids and teens didn't get addressed until enough kids died. The toxicity risks from some fat-soluable nutrients are much worse that others. Sadly, many folks' approach to taking care of their health is chasing after the latest fad pill or herb. Some of the problems the medical system has are a result of it having to protect itself from the large number of stupid patients out there. I expect that the recommended amounts of nutrients that are out there are another "lowest common denominator" answer. If you get those recommended amounts, you'll stay alive and no one should have any problems with too much of one of them. With the progress on the genetic mapping front, the potential to tailor a medication to the person taking it is something I think will make a big difference. I think I have some pretty good docs at the moment. My GP is relatively new and I think we started out with a rough spot or two. I don't blindly accept what he tells me to do. I follow up and do my homework and, if it means taking a new pill, I try to understand why and what to watch out for in case it doesn't work so well for me. He's seen me enough times now that he understands that and we get along fine. We treat each other as peers. I can understand why he was a bit annoyed at first when I didn't immediately agree to his recommendations. We've all felt the same way whenever we tell our kids to do something and they roundly ignore us!
---------------------------------------- It was my endocrinologist who found my B12 deficiency. I had no idea of it. Getting a smart doc is not the best doc. You want a smart one that works well with you as a partner in managing your health. I really annoyed one doc many, many years ago when I got a second opinion on whether or not I needed an appendectomy. Well, the first guy couldn't say with complete certainty that I did and I prefer to not go under the knife needlessly. Reading your post was a good read for me. I may just consider D3 as well. I won't necessarily take a big dose to start but I'd have my blood checked to see what my levels are like and watch how they change and adjust my dosage appropriately. |
