Hello all!
I have a 4 processor PC running CEP2 (WinXP). It is running 4 tasks at a time. Things go OK, but there are many times when I get messages like: 4/1/2011 8:08:56 AM World Community Grid Task E201655_724_C.21.C16H9N3SSe.00475314.4.set1d06_1 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file 4/1/2011 8:08:56 AM World Community Grid If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project. 4/1/2011 8:08:56 AM World Community Grid Task E201658_328_C.21.C19H12S2.00169510.2.set1d06_0 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file 4/1/2011 8:08:56 AM World Community Grid If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project. 4/1/2011 8:08:56 AM World Community Grid Task E201661_011_C.22.C18H10N2OS.00016002.3.set1d06_1 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file 4/1/2011 8:08:56 AM World Community Grid If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project. 4/1/2011 8:08:56 AM World Community Grid Task E201662_136_C.22.C18H10N2OS.00014682.4.set1d06_0 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file 4/1/2011 8:08:56 AM World Community Grid If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project. And very often, as can be seen above, I get these messages for all 4 tasks currently running, and at exactly the same time. The above messages occured (maybe a coincidence) when I was writing a DVD. Any ideas? |

Another application is probably locking up the CPU and this is causing Boinc to timeout when communicating to the client.
For any further support I would suggest you post up more details on your system (hardware and software). For example CPU type, RAM amount, hard drive space, operating system, Boinc version, AV program. The first page of Boinc Messages is a good start. |

Thanks for the answer, here are the first messages of BOINC, right up to the point where it starts the tasks.

4 CEP2 tasks simultaneously on a dual core HT mobile CPU with only 256KB/3MB Cache, and presumably a mobile-level hard disk and low dual channel RAM frequencies. Too taxing; heavy disk I/O required for CEP2.
----------------------------------------I suggest you change suspend work if non-BOINC CPU load exceeds 75 % to 25% and run a mix of tasks from several projects, it's more efficient anyway. [Edit 1 times, last edit by skgiven at Apr 1, 2011 5:04:24 PM] |

Thanks for the suggestions, I will do that. As this problem is not eaily reproducible I won;t be able to tell for sure if the suggestions helped, but they seem like a good idea anyway!

I switched two of my quad core systems over to this project earlier today, I can see one of the tasks is already been running longer than usual and have the "no finished file" message as described above. Smells like badly written software to me. The start up stuff from BOINC is...

These zero status / no file are often a result of a system being very busy as it can be with the quite "taxing" CEP2.
The 75% to 25% change as suggested will only result in BOINC suspending even at the littlest of non-BOINC system loads, WCG's default actually being 50%, but the logs don't show it kicking in, which indicates that the "Run based on preferences" is not selected on the "Activity" menu. --//-- |

Still smells like bad coding to me.

Why not post the actual result log instead of smelling, where the message log is just a part of the diagnostics equation? "Those who know the mechanism", will tell how BOINC has been coded since it´s early inception, when it can´t talk to the science app when it´s scheduled to do so. Running 4 CEP2 concurrent on a quad, as your log suggests, is not what the doctors prescribed as original dosage... 1 per device is for a reason and testing is needed to see if more can be handled, 50% of cores sort of the workable/practical limit for most. Any more and performance suffers badly, particularly if multiple CEP2 jobs checkpoint simultaneously.
