I am (or was) running a version 5 release of the BOINC client. It was migrated over from my old system which started out as a Windows XP system, but was upgraded to Windows 7. I found that the client did not automatically start during a boot. I often failed to remember to start it when booting. Easy to fix, I thought.
----------------------------------------I couldn't find any straight forward directions for fixing it, so I thought, since I have a version 6 on my laptop that starts up just fine, why not just upgrade! Ha! When I download the version 6 code, and run the install, I get a message: World Community Grid Installer Information 1: The InstallScript engine is missing from this machine. If available. please run ISScript.msi, or contact your support personnel for futher assistance. Naturally, version 5 is gone. And version 6 won't install. No, there is not ISScript.msi on my machine. That seems to be an install program for XP level machines. This is a Win 7 Professional machine. I have NO issues installing other programs. So, what to do? Any help will be apprciated. Right now, BOINC is not running at all. [Edit 1 times, last edit by MarshallW at Apr 3, 2011 4:50:22 PM] |

If you go to a prompt and type msiexec and hit enter, do you get a popup dialog?
----------------------------------------It may be a corrupt installer. Have you tried downloading again? |

It is trying to use the XP install to uninstall your old BOINC. I am unfamiliar with manual uninstalls, but you might ask over at BOINC ( http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ ). Once you have uninstalled, it is easy to install WCG BOINC 6.10.58.

Perhaps you could try an uninstall program to uninstall Boinc and then use an up to date version of Boinc. Do a restart after you uninstall and then install 6.10.58 (either x64 or x86 depending on your operating system). The default installation location changes from XP to Vista/Win7.

First, thanks to everyone who replied with ideas and suggestions. After trying to reinstall Version 5 (didn't work - same error), copying over ISScript.msi from an XP system in the house (didn't work), I started on the Manual Uninstall Method post pointed to above by skgiven. The first 3 options did not apply, the fourth option allowed me to reinstall V5, but I still could not remove it or install V6. So I went to the last method involving registry edits, and that cleared the V5 install and all traces of it, and allowed me to install V6 which is not up and running. Elapsed time of about 28 hours, which isn't too bad.
It looks like BOINC will start up on boot which makes me happy - that was the point of the whole exercise. Thanks again to all. |
